Men's Basketball Earns Tough Fought 70-65 Victory Over Hilbert Saturday Afternoon

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team shot 50% from behind the three-point line making 8-of-16 as it earned a gritty 70-65 victory over Hilbert, Saturday afternoon in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest.

Pitt-Greensburg's victory over Hilbert was its first since a 76-74 victory in the 2015 AMCC Tournament Championship and the first regular-season victory since a 100-98 win on January 17, 2015.

The Bobcats had four players reach double-figures in the victory, totaling 16 points from both sophomore Cam Seigfreid and freshman JoJo France. Both players had nine points in the opening 20 minutes of play and seven points after halftime.

Jay Grubb was the third Bobcats to reach double-digits as the junior posted a season-high 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and knocking down both attempts from three-point distance. Kyle Bondi was the fourth player for the home side in double-figures as the senior came off the bench and added 10 points, two rebounds, and two assists in 18 minutes.

As a team, the Bobcats shot 44.2% from the field, hit 8-of-16 from behind the three-point arc, and came up clutch from the charity stripe, knocking down 16-of-211 for 76.2%. Defensively, Pitt-Greensburg held Hilbert to just 36.7% from the field, 0-for-6 from three, but Hilbert made up for its lack of an outside attack, hitting 21-of-26 from the line for 80.8%.

Hilbert held an early one-point lead (3-2) on a layup by Hunter Martineau, but Pitt-Greensburg responded with 10-straight points over the next two minutes for a 12-3 lead with 16:45 left in the first half.

Pitt-Greensburg continued to remain in the lead, but Hilbert slowly crept back and would take a 25-24 advantage on two free-throws by Masia Phillips. The two sides continued to trade buckets and would head into the locker room all tied at 36.

The Bobcats remained ahead on the scoreboard for the entire second half, but a layup from Joseph Braniecki tied the contest at 60 for the Hawks with 5:55 left in regulation.

A free-throw from Spaid and a fastbreak layup from Kingston put the Bobcats ahead 64-60 with 2:54 remaining. Like they had done all game long, the Hawks once again would tie the game at 64 after back-to-back baskets from Roberts and Braniecki.

Following the basket, the Bobcats once again took the lead as France came up huge with two makes at the line.

On the ensuing possession, Dre Turnispeed grabbed his own miss, put up another shot which was no good, but hauled down his rebound and was fouled, which sent him to the line for two attempts. Turnispeed made the first attempt but missed the second, which was grabbed by Cody Spaid, as the Bobcats led 66-65 with six seconds left. Spaid went to the line and knocked down both attempts to put the Bobcats up 68-65 with three seconds left.

Following a timeout by Hilbert, Pitt-Greensburg would intentionally foul the Hawks once they ball crossed half court. Martineau went to the line but missed the attempt, which was grabbed by Seigfreid and Pitt-Greensburg would go on for the 70-65 win.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court Wednesday evening, when it plays host to La Roche. Wednesday's tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm.
