@Pittgbgbaseball Splits With Cabrini To Opener 2018 Season

AUBDURNDALE, Fla- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team smashed four home runs as it split a doubleheader with Cabrini Friday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational.

Pitt-Greensburg took the opening game of the day by a score of 9-7, but Cabrini earned the split, winning 15-9 in the nightcap. In total, the Bobcats put together an impressive day at the plate, batting .371 as a team with four doubles and four home runs.

Noah Beasley led the way offensive going 5-for-8 on the afternoon, with four runs, two doubles, and two RBI. In the first game of the afternoon, Beasley went 3-for-4 with two runs, a double, and an RBI and in game two, the sophomore infielder collected two hits with two runs and an RBI.

Reno Rainey put together a great debut for the Bobcats, collecting three runs, four hits, and drove in four runs. In the first of two on the day, Rainey went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and followed up with two hits, a double, and an RBI.

Tyler Holland, Chris Common, and Mike Parlak each tallied a home run on the afternoon for Pitt-Greensburg, while Daniel Kiester and Zack Zimmerman each recorded multi-hit efforts.

Game 1- Cabrini 7, Pitt-Greensburg 9

Cabrini jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as it plated a run in the top of the first and added two more in the second. The Bobcats came storming back for five runs in the third and an additional four in the fourth.

Derek Shaw led off the third with a single and Kiester was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Beasley then plated a run with a single up the middle and Zimmerman drove in Kiester with a single to left center. With two runners of base, Rainey came up to bat and made the most of his first plate appearance for the Bobcats. Rainey smashed a ball over the fence in foul territory, but later in the at-bat, blasted a three-run bomb over the left centerfield fence to complete the five-run inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats had their first three batters reach base, which brought up Holland with the bags full. Kiester led off the inning with a single, followed by a Beasley single, and Rainey reached first on a hit-by-pitch. Holland drilled the first pitch he saw over the right center wall to clear the bases and give the Bobcats a 9-4 advantage.

The Cavaliers added three runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to two, but Dean Edwards was called in to pitch with one out in the fifth, and the freshman hurler did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings of relief to earn his first career save.

Game 2- Pitt-Greensburg 9, Cabrini 15

The second game of the afternoon, the two teams put on an offensive display, combining for 24 runs on 22 hits.

Pitt-Greensburg jumped out to a two-run lead with two runs in the top of the second, both of which came with two outs. Mike Spadafore displayed patience at the plate, drawing a walk after a seven-pitch at bat and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Josh Breittholz attempted to throw over to first base, but his throw hit Spadaore, allowing the senior outfielder to advance to second on the throwing error. Beasley and Zimmerman each drew walks to load up the bases and Rainey reached base on an error by the shortstop, while Beasley and Spadafore each scored on the play.

Cabrini responded with three runs in the second and another in the third to lead 4-2 after three innings of action.

The Bobcats plated an additional two runs in the fourth as Beasley and Rainey each drove in runs with RBI doubles.

Cabrini came right back and added the runs in the bottom of the inning and scored four in the fifth for an 11-4 lead with two innings left.

Pitt-Greensburg would not go down quietly as it cut the lead to 11-9 with a five-run sixth. Evan Johnston led off the inning with a double in his first at bat and Zimmerman drove in the run first of the inning on an RBI groundout to third base. Later in the inning, Chris Common smashed a three-run homer and Parlak followed with a solo-shot to give the Bobcats back-to-back home runs.

The comeback would ultimately come up short, as the Cavaliers got four runs in the sixth and would go on for a 15-9 win to earn the split.

Pitt-Greensburg is back in action tomorrow morning with a double-header against Rhode Island College. Saturday's twin-bill is set for 9 am.
