Parlak's Grand Slam Powers @Pittgbgbaseball Past Bethany

GREENSBURG- Mike Parlak's eighth inning grand slam propelled the Pitt-Greensburg baseball team to an 8-6 victory over Bethany in a non-conference contest Monday afternoon at Bobcat Park.

Trailing 6-4 entering the bottom of the eighth, the first two batters of the inning for the Bobcats both recorded outs, but Pat Aul kept the inning alive with a single to right field. Reno Rainey and Tyler Holland both walked to load the bases, which brought Parlak to the plate. The senior outfielder on the fourth pitch of the at-bat, smashed his fourth home run of the season over the right field fence to put the Bobcats ahead for the first time of the game, 6-4.

Ben Green was brought on to pitch the ninth for Pitt-Greensburg and had runners on first and second with just one out, but got Saige Micomonaco to hit a grounder to Daniel Kiester, who stepped on second base and calmly tossed it to Rainey for the final out of the afternoon.

Andy Prentice tossed a scoreless eighth inning and recorded two strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the season, while Green earned his second save.

Parlak led the way offensively, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and drove in five RBI, while Holland, Rainey, and Derek Shaw each collected two hits on the afternoon. Holland also collected two RBI, including smashing his second home run of the season, while Mike Dolan plated a run in the fifth for the Bobcats in the fifth.

In total, Pitt-Greensburg belted out eight runs on 12 hits and limited the Bison to just six runs on just six hits.

Bethany jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in their first at-bats, but the Bobcats got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Rainey, which scored Beasley. Beasley reached base as he drew a leadoff walk.

The Bison plated their fourth run of the game as Micomonaco scored on an error in the fourth inning, but Parlak got the run back for the Bobcats in the bottom of the inning, as he belted a solo-shot to cut the deficit to 4-2.

In the top of the fifth, the visitors added to their lead with an additional two runs on Micomonaco's two-run blast, but like they had done all game, the Bobcats got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Rainey came around to score on an RBI base knock by Dolan.

The Bison continued to hold a 6-3 lead until the seventh, when Holland drilled the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to put the Bobcats within two, 6-4.

Prentice was brought on to pitch the eighth, and the freshman did not allow a hit and the Bobcats came to the plate with two at-bats left.

The inning looked bleak as Mike Spadafore and Beasley recorded the first two outs of the inning, but Patrick Aul drilled a 1-0 pitch to right field to keep the inning alive. Rainey put together a great at-bat, reaching base on a walk after a six-pitch at-bat, which then brought up the power-hitting first baseman. The first two pitches of the at-bat were called strikes against Holland, followed by two balls. Holland fouled off the fifth pitch and saw the count go full with a ball. The next three pitches he managed to foul off, but reached base as the 11th pitch of the at-bat was outside. With the bases full, Parlak stepped to the plate and on the fourth pitch of the plate appearance, smashed his second home run of the game over the right field fence for a grand slam to put the Bobcats ahead 6-4.

Green came on in the ninth and after giving up a one-out single followed by a walk, got Micomonaco to ground into a double play to end the game and send Pitt-Greensburg to the 6-4 victory.

The Bobcats return to action Wednesday afternoon, as they face Penn State Altoona for a doubleheader started at 1 pm.
