@Pittgbgbaseball Opens Conference Play With Extra Inning Victory Over Alfred State

GREENSBURG- Mike Parlak's solo home run tied the game at seventh in the bottom of the seven inning and Ian Hart's pop up that was mishandled by Brody Burdett gave the Pitt-Greensburg baseball team (7-7, 1-1 AMCC) an 8-7 comeback victory in the opening game of the day against Alfred State (8-12, 3-1 AMCC), Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Park.

Game 1- Alfred State 7, Pitt-Greensburg 8 (8 innings)

Alfred led 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but with one out in the inning and a 1-1 count, Parlak belted his fifth home run of the season over the left field fence to tie the game at seven and sent the game into extra innings. This is the second straight game that Parlak has homered to tie or give Pitt-Greensburg the lead, as he smashed a grand slam to give the Bobcats an 8-6 victory in their game against Bethany.

Rainey got the eighth inning rally going with a double to left center and Tyler Holland was intentionally walked as the Bobcats had runners on first and second with just one out. Chris Common moved both runners up 60 feet with a ground out, and on an 0-1 pitch, Hart hit a high pop up that stayed in the infield, but the wind played havoc as Burdett followed the ball from the third base line to the pitchers mound, and on a diving attempt the ball fell out of his glove, allowing Rainey to score the winning run.

Dean Edwards did not allow a hit over the final two innings and struck out two to earn his first career victory.

After Andy Prentice sent the Pioneers down in order to begin the game, the Bobcats took the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Patrick Aul scored on a balk. Aul drew a one out walk and Holland stroked a two-out double down the right field line, which advanced Aul to third. Aul then came around to score on a balk for the first run of the afternoon.

The Pioneers totaled three runs on four hits in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead heading into the home half of the second.

Pitt-Greensburg got a run back in the second as Parlak scored Rainey on an RBI groundout. Rainey began the inning reaching on an error and Common showed patience at the plate drawing a walk. Parlak then followed as he hit into a fielders choice which scored Rainey for the second run of the game for the Bobcats.

The Pioneers added a run in the fourth as they smacked back-to-back doubles to increase their lead to 4-2.

Colin Johnson belted a two-run blast in the sixth and Brent Woodward hit a sacrifice fly as Alfred State added three runs in the sixth and held a 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

Daniel Kiester drew a one-out walk to begin the sixth and Mike Spadafore singled to third base on the first pitch he saw to give Pitt-Greensburg runners on first and second. Noah Beasley followed with a strikeout, but Aul scored Kiester on a single, and Rainey smashed a three-run bomb to cut the deficit to 7-6 with one inning left.

Abdi Rodriguez-Polanco send the Pioneers down in the seventh and with one-out in the bottom of the inning, Parlak stroked a 1-1 pitch over the left field and sent the game into extra innings all tied at seven.

In the bottom of the eighth, Rainey smacked a one-out double and Holland was intentionally walked. Common advanced both runners on a ground, followed by Parlak who drew a walk. With the base loaded, Hart hit a pop up on a 0-1 count that the wind got hold of and forced a dive from the Pioneer third baseman. Burdett made a great diving attempt after the wind case the Pioneer third baseman to run from third base to the other side of the pitchers mound, but on his diving attempt to catch the third out, the ball popped out of his glove when it hit the ground, which allowed Rainey to score the winning run.

Game 2- Alfred 5, Pitt-Greensburg 3

The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Johnson belted a two-run blast in the second inning.

The Bobcats got a run back in the bottom of the third as Holland smacked an RBI single through the right side to score Rainey.

Pitt-Greensburg added two runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 advantage with two innings left. Holland and Common drew back-to-back walks, followed by a single from Parlak to load the bases. Hart stepped up the bat with the bags full, and singled through the left side which scored Common and Holland to put the Bobcats ahead by a run.

The lead would not last long, as Johnson blasted a three-run home run in the sixth to send Alfred State to a 5-3 victory.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to action tomorrow afternoon, when it faces Penn State Altoona at Mount Aloysius College starting at 1 pm.
