Volleyball Falls In Four Sets At Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg volleyball team totaled a season-high 32 kills, but would fall 3-1 to host Waynesburg, Thursday evening in a non-conference match.

The Bobcats totaled a season-high 32 kills on 108 attacks and were led by Alexis Ray, who recorded a career-best 12 kills on 36 swings for a .111 attack percentage. Mackenzie Schropp also put together a solid game offensively with seven kills, followed by Marissa Leonard who totaled six kills, and Sabre Turner, who had five.

Defensively, three players notched double-digit kills, led by Schropp and Emma Dongilli's 12 and Kassi Niver who chipped in with 11 digs. Dongilli also paced the Bobcat attack with a team-high 30 assists.

Pitt-Greensburg and Waynesburg traded points early on in the opening stanza, but after the Bobcats tied the set at four, Alexis Ray's ace followed by a Yellow Jacket error put the Bobcats ahead 6-4. Following the short fleury by Pitt-Greensburg, Waynesburg reeled off seven-straight points, which forced a timeout by the Bobcats. After the timeout, both teams traded back-to-back points, but the Yellow Jackets would go on to win the opening set by a score of 25-15.

Waynesburg continued the momentum into the second set and started with three-straight points, before Ray ended the run with a kill to get the Bobcats on the board. The Yellow Jackets answered the Ray kill with a run of three points, but Ray was at it again with back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to 6-3. Schropp's kill got the Bobcats within two early on in the second stanza, but that was as close as the visitors would get, as Waynesburg sailed to a 25-12 win to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bobcats put together arguably their best set of the year in the third stanza. Despite a slow start in which the Yellow Jackets led 6-2, Pitt-Greensburg would reel off a string of four-straight points to grab hold of the lead 7-6. Pitt-Greensburg continued to hold the lead for much of the third game and after a kill by Ray followed by a service ace from Turner, Pitt-Greensburg led 15-12 and forced a timeout. Pitt-Greensburg continued to run its offensive attack for the remainder of the game and would force a fourth set as it took game three 25-20.

Following the brief intermission between sets, Ray's kill gave the Bobcats a quick 1-0 advantage, but Waynesburg reeled off seven-straight points to grab hold of the set.

A Yellow Jacket error and a Ray kill, sandwiched between a Jordyn Wyllie kill got the Bobcats within five (8-3), but the Yellow Jackets continued to increase their lead and would take the fourth set and the match with a 25-9 victory.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to action Friday evening, when it welcomes cross-town rival St. Vincent to Chambers Hall for its home opener at 7 pm.
