Volleyball Falls In Home Opener To St. Vincent

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg volleyball team dropped its home opener to cross-town rival St. Vincent, by a score of 3-0 Friday evening in Chambers Hall.

Prior to the match, junior Emma Dongilli was honored for achieving 1,000 assists, which she surpassed the career milestone this past Wednesday night at Muskingum.

The Bobcats totaled 22 kills on 66 swings for a .045 attack percentage, while St. Vincent smacked 32 kills on 65 attacks. Mackenzie Schropp led the way for Pitt-Greensburg with six kills, followed by five from Alexis Ray, and Marissa Leonard who chipped in with four. Leonard also put on a serving display totaling a match-high seven aces, while Dongilli topped double-digit assists once again with 13.

Saint Vincent jumped out to a quick 18-5 lead early in the opening set, but the Bobcats responded with seven-straight points to get within four, 21-17, which forced a timeout by the Bearcats. However, following the timeout, the Bearcats reeled off four-consecutive points and took the opening game 25-19.

Pitt-Greensburg came out strong in the second game, leading 4-1 on a service error by St. Vincent but the Bearcats came back to tie the game at seven. Following an attack error by St. Vincent, Pitt-Greensburg would get within one point at 11-10, but St. Vincent had a 9-0 run to extend its lead to 21-10. St. Vincent won five of the last six points to end the set and would take a 2-0 lead, winning set two 25-11.

Once again the Bobcats started out strong in the third set, roaring to a 6-1 advantage, but following a service ace by Leonard, the Bearcats won six-straight points and led 7-6, before Pitt-Greensburg called TO. Pitt-Greensburg got within two on a kill by Schropp, but that was the closest the Bobcats would get for the remainder of the set, as St. Vincent won the third set and the match, 25-19.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court Tuesday evening, when it welcomes Westminster to Chambers Hall. Tuesday's match is set for 7 pm.
