Volleyball Posts Season-High 39 Kills In Four Set Loss At Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio- The Pitt-Greensburg volleyball team tallied a season-best 39 kills, but dropped a 3-1 decision to Franciscan in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Wednesday evening.

The Bobcats put together one of their best performances on the season, posting season-best in kills (39), assists (37), digs (59), and total attacks (144). Despite falling in the fourth set which clinched the match for Franciscan, the Bobcats tallied 15 kills, which is the most kills in a single-set this season. In total, Pitt-Greensburg tallied 39 kills on 144 swings for a .090 attack percentage.

Alexis Ray and Mackenzie Schropp both topped double-digit kills for the Bobcats with 14 and 12 respectively, while Emma Dongilli and Kassi Niver posted season-bests in both assists and digs. Dongilli totaled 34 assists, while Niver tallied 24 digs, her second performance with 20 or more digs.

Franciscan took the opening two sets 25-15 and 25-17, before Pitt-Greensburg forced a fourth set, with a 25-19 victory. The Barons would go on to take the fourth set and claim a 3-1 victory with a 25-21 win in the final stanza.

Pitt-Greensburg kept things close in the opening set and would trail 13-11 on a ball handling error from Emily Nutter, but the Barons rallied with five-straight points to put the set away. Franciscan would go on to take a 1-0 lead with a 25-15 victory in the opening set.

The second set remained close early on as the Bobcats held a slight 6-5 advantage after Schropp's kill, but the Barons answered picking up seven of the next eight points to extend their advantage to 12-7. Pitt-Greensburg continued to chip away at the deficit and would tie the game at 13 after a Baron error. Despite the continued pressure by the Bobcats, Franciscan held Pitt-Greensburg off outscoring the visitors 12-2 for the remainder of the set.

Pitt-Greensburg held the lead for much of the fourth set and after an ace by Emily Nutter, the Bobcats reeled off four-straight points to give themselves some breathing room. An ace by Dongilli pushed the Greensburg advantage to 19-13 and the Bobcats would extend the match with a 25-19 victory.

Franciscan jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the fourth stanza before back-to-back Bobcat points cut the deficit to 7-5. The Barons responded with a quick three-point stretch before Pitt-Greensburg called timeout. After the timeout, Pitt-Greensburg ran off four-straight points to get within a point at 12-11.

The Barons responded with a four-point stretch of their own to push their lead to 16-11 and would claim a 25-21 victory in the fourth stanza to take home the victory.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court Saturday afternoon, when it plays host to Medaille for its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference home opener. Saturday's action is set to get underway at 1 pm.
