Johnson’s Career High Lifts Men's Basketball Over Bethany

GREENSBURG, PA- Matt Johnson poured in a career high 27 points to lead the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg men's basketball team to victory on Saturday (Nov. 23). The Bobcats used a 56-point first half defeat the Bethany College Bison 81-60. UPG collects their second straight victory and moves to 2-1 on the young season, while Bethany drops to 0-6.

Cam Seigfreid joined Johnson in the twenty-point club, with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Cody Spaid led all rebounders with 12 and was one of three Bobcats with nine points. Along with Spaid, JoJo France and Nate Burt each put nine in their individual scoring column.

The Bobcats came out firing. They made 10 of their first 13 shots in the game. Johnson had a tremendous first half, going six for seven from the field while collecting 19 points in the frame. UPG jumped out to a quick 10-point lead just over three minutes into the game thanks to a 10-2 run. A France lay in made it a double-digit advantage and Spaid posted five points during the run.

Two minutes later, Pitt-Greensburg went on a 6-0 run from 14:50 to 12:25. One minute after that run concluded Nate Burt made a layup, which started a 7-0 run that went until 8:19 when Johnson hit a three to put the Bobcats up 19.

Johnson dropped in a layup with seven seconds left to make the UPG lead 21, the largest of the first half. The layup capped off a 14-5 run by Pitt-Greensburg. Bethany went end to end after Johnson's layup to score and make it 56-37 at the break.

Pitt-Greensburg got out to their largest lead of the game, 23 points, early in the second half, as France connected from deep to gain the margin at the 18:23 mark. UPG returned to the 23-point advantage two more times over the remainder of the contest. Both on layups, one by Siegfried at 15:36 and the other by Johnson at 11:43.

Bethany attempted to get back in the game, but UPG didn't allow anything more than a 5-0 run by the Bison. At the 3:25 mark, Bethany got as close as they would in the second half at 73-60. The Blue and Gold dominated the rest of the way, not allowing the Green and White to score again. Pitt-Greensburg scored the final eight points of the game, four came from Johnson, which put him over his career high.

The Bobcats open AMCC play on Tuesday (Nov. 26) when they play host to Franciscan University. Pitt-Greensburg looks to avenge two overtime losses against the Barons from last season.
