Men’s Basketball Ends 2019 With Convincing Win Over Chatham

GREENSBURG, PA- The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg men's basketball team finished off the 2019 calendar year with a convincing 90-72 victory over the defending Presidents Athletic Conference champions, Chatham University, on Tuesday (Dec. 31) afternoon inside Chambers Hall.

The Bobcats (8-2) came out firing, in which they scored the first eleven points of the game and never looked back en route to their eighth win of the season. The Cougars drop to 7-5 on the year.

Matt Johnson led all scorers with 20 points on the afternoon, followed by Cam Seigfreid, who scored 16 on 6-of-8 shooting. JoJo France went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc en route to a 14 point afternoon. Torian Jenkins rounded out the four Bobcats in double figures with 13.

Seconds into the game Cody Spaid made a lay-up, then had a block on the defensive end and turned it into a fast break layup for himself to score the first four points of the game. This sparked the 11-0 run that the Bobcats went on in the first three-plus minutes of the game. Pitt-Greensburg had two steals during the run. The second steal led to a fast break three pointer by JoJo France to cap the run off.

UPG lead by seven or more the rest of the first frame and got the lead as high as 15. The 15-point advantage came after a Matt Johnson steal and lay-up.

Chatham narrowed the margin to seven points at 1:11 in the first half, but Pitt-Greensburg gained the momentum into the locker room by scoring the final six points of the half. Tommy Arbuckle drained an and-one three pointer, then Torian Jenkins swiped the ball from the Cougars and slammed a fast break dunk to send the Bobcats into the break ahead 44-31.

Pitt-Greensburg controlled the whole second half. They held a double-digit lead for the length of the second half. The largest lead came at 74-54 (20 points), on a Johnson lay in that capped off a 6-0 Bobcat run at the 6:24 mark.

The Bobcats dominated the paint, outscoring the Cougars 44-16. UPG also outrebounded Chatham 44-33 and were led by Spaid, who hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Pitt-Greensburg assisted on 22 of their 34 baskets. Spaid dished out five to lead the team and Seigfreid had four assists.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to AMCC play to open the 2020 part of their season on Saturday (Jan. 4) when they host the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The Pitt vs. Pitt rivalry matchup is set for a 2 pm tip inside Chambers Hall.
