@Pittgbgbaseball Sweeps Chatham In Home Opener Monday Afternoon

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team broke out of its early season funk on offense, posting 24 runs on 29 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Chatham, Monday afternoon in the season-opener at Bobcat Park.

Pitt-Greensburg won the opening game of the afternoon 6-5 in 11 innings and pounded out 15 hits in the 18-6 victory in game two. The 18 runs and 15 hits are both season-highs for Pitt-Greensburg in 2019.

Chatham 5, Pitt-Greensburg 6- (11 innings)

Pitching Decision
Win- Andy Prentice (1-0)
Loss- Adam Cerar (1-1)

The Bobcats also got solid pitching from Abdi Rodriguez-Polanco and Dakota McWilliams in game one, as well as Mikey Sullivan in game two. Rodriguez-Polanco tossed five solid innings in the first game of the day, allowing just six hits and added a strikeout, while McWilliams scattered four hits over five strong innings in relief. Andy Prentice was brought on in the 11th and did not allow a hit and struck out one to earn his first win of the season.

Down to their final three outs entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Pitt-Greensburg would not go down quietly. Jordan Cavanaugh began the rally with a double to right center and Chris Common followed with an RBI base-knock, which cut the deficit to 5-4. Evan Johnston was hit by a pitch and Mikey Sullivan loaded the bases with a great positioned bunt. With the bags full on Bobcats, Derek Shaw came through on an 0-2 count as the junior catcher smacked a single to right field, which scored Common to tie the game. Althought the bases were still loaded with no outs, Pitt-Greensburg could not manage a run and the game would head to extra innings.

Neither team could get much offense going in the extra innings, but in the bottom of the 11th inning, Pitt-Greensburg used some two-out magic. The first two batters of the inning got out, but Shaw kept the inning alive with a walk and Dan Kiester was hit by a pitch as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. Brody Bonadio stepped to the plate and on the fouth pitch of the at-bat, drilled a single to left center to give the Bobcats the walk-off win in the 11th inning.

Chatham jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a sac fly from Andonisio in the top of the first inning. The Cougars added two additional runs in the third inning to grab a 3-0 advantage, but in the home half of the inning, Tyler Holland smacked a single through the right side of the diamond, which scored Ben Green to cut the deficit to 3-1 after three innings of play. Ben Green walked on four pitches to begin the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Pitt-Greensburg plated two runs to tie the game at three. The Cougars added a run in the fifth and sixth inning for a 5-3 lead entering the seventh and final inning of the opening game of the day. Common and Shaw both drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the contest at five and force extra innings.
