@Pittgbgbaseball Takes Two At Medaille To Open Conference Play

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y.- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team swept Medaille Sunday afternoon, in its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener. Pitt-Greensburg won the opening game 12-1 and completed with a 14-9 victory in the nightcap. 

With the victories, Pitt-Greensburg improves to 5-10 overall and 2-0 in the AMCC, while Medaille drops to 4-4 and 0-2 in conference play.

Pitching Decision

Behind a dominant effort on the mound from starter Andy Prentice and three hits from both Chris Common and Derek Shaw, Pitt-Greensburg took the opening game of the afternoon by a score of 12-1. 

Prentice scattered four hits over six strong innings, giving up just one earned run and tied a season-high with five strikeouts to post his second win of the season. Common and Shaw each went 3-for-4 in the game with a double and three RBI. 

Pitt-Greensburg got off to a quick start in its opening at-bats of the afternoon, with a four-run first inning. Ben Green smacked a one-out single and moved over to second on a hard hit ball from Tyler Holland, that was misplayed by the Mavericks. Jordan Cavanaugh struck out for the second out of the inning, but the Bobcats used two-out lightning to take the lead. Common stepped to the plate with two outs, and drilled a double, which scored both Holland and Green. Following a walk from Evan Johnston, Shaw singled home Common for the third run of the inning and Johnston would come around the score the fourth and final run, when Mikey Sullivan reached on an error. 

Mikey Sullivan and Brody Bonadio each drove in a run in the third to extend the Bobcat lead to 7-0 after three innings of play. 

Pitt-Greensburg added a run in the fourth, fifth, and six innings, and both Common and Shaw knocked in a run in the seventh as Pitt-Greensburg posted a 12-1 victory in the first game of the twin-bill. 

Griffin Clark came on to pitch the seventh inning for the Bobcats and the freshman right hander allowed just one hit.

The Bobcats once again got off to a great start, belting out four hits in the top of the first. Brody Bonadio and Green both singled to start off the inning, which brought up Holland, who proceeded to double home Bonadio to put the Bobcats up 1-0. Medaille was called for a walk, which scored Green and advanced Holland to third. Following the balk, Cavanaugh drew a walk and Common then plated the third run of the inning on a double. 

Medaille answered with two runs in te bottom of the frame, but the vaunted Pitt-Greensburg offense continued in their second at-bats of the game.

Daniel Kiester was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and stole second to move into scoring position. After the stolen base, Bonadio scored Kiester with a single and Green followed with a double that plated Bonadio. The next batter for Pitt-Greensburg was Holland, who scored score Green on a base hit. The fourth and final run of the inning came with two outs on a base hit from Shaw, which allowed Holland to touch home plate. 

Matt Mish shut down the Mavericks in the home half of the second inning and each team delivered two runs in the third as Pitt-Greensburg remained in the lead 9-4 after three innings of action. 

Medaille tallied a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to cut the deficit to three, but a two-run seventh, which included a solo bomb by Green extended the Bobcat advantage to five (11-6). 

The Mavericks had their own two-run seventh inning to once again get within three, but Pitt-Greensburg would take advantage on an error in the eighth to plate two runs. 

Pitt-Greensburg tallied a run in the ninth as Common scored on a passed ball and a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning from Dakota McWilliams sent the Bobcats to the 14-9 victory and a doubleheader sweep of Medaille.
