Baseball Gets Road Sweep At First-Place Mt. Aloysius

CRESSON- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Mt. Aloysius Wednesday afternoon. Pitt-Greensburg won the opening game of the day 10-8 in 10 innings and completed the sweep with a 12-2 victory in game two. 

Mt. Aloysius entered the game in first place in the AMCC standings holding a perfect 8-0 record. With the sweep, the Bobcats improve to 8-14 overall and 5-3 in conference play, while Mt. Aloysius falls to 21-7 and 8-2 in AMCC action. 

Pitt-Greensburg 10, Mt. Aloysius 8 (10 innings)

Pitt-Greensburg and Mt. Aloysius were tied at five heading into the seventh inning, but the Bobcats used two-out magic to score two runs. The first two batters for Pitt-Greensburg got out to begin the inning, but Matt Mish and Chris Common drew back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second. Following a pitching change by the Mounties, Derek Shaw and Griffin Clark each drove in a run as the Bobcats took a 7-5 advantage into the bottom of the inning. 

Dakota McWilliams, who continued his great year on the mound tossed another strong outing for the Bobcats. To begin the seventh inning, Andy Prentice was brought in in relief of McWilliams. Prentice struck out the first batter he saw, but Doug Smith reached on an error by Shaw, which was followed by a walk to give the Mounties two runners on with no outs. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, but Prentice struck out Aaron Shinn for the first out of the inning. The Bobcat relief pitcher recorded the second out of the inning on a line out, but Smith managed to score on the play. Patrick Mahon doubled home the second run of the inning and the Mounties tied the game at seven. 

Neither side could manage much offense in the eighth and ninth innings as the score remained tied at seven heading into the 10th frame. 

Two of the first three batters got out to begin the 10th for the Bobcats, but Dylan DeRoss kept the inning alive with a single. Brody Bonadio walked to load the bases and with the bags full, Ben Green came through with a clutch base hit, which plated two runs. Following a pitching change by Mt. Aloysius, a third run of the inning score for the Bobcats as they led 10-7 at the end of the top of the 10th. 

Mt. Aloysius plated a run in the bottom of the inning, but Mikey Sullivan did not allow a hit and Pitt-Greensburg held on for a 10-8 victory in the opening game of the afternoon. McWilliams allowed five runs on 10 hits over six innings and struck out one in a non-decision. Sullivan tossed the final three innings for Pitt-Greensburg and the freshman did not allow a hit to earn his second win of the season. 

DeRoss led the Bobcats with two hits in the game, while Green and Clark each drove in multiple runs in the victory. 

Pitt-Greensburg 12, Mt. Aloysius 2

The vaunted Pitt-Greensburg offense was on full display in game two, plating 12 runs on 18 hits. Tony Ianuzzo scattered five hits over five strong innings and DeRoss was brought on in relief for the final two innings, allowing just one hit. 

Common led off the second inning with a solo-bomb to put the Bobcats into the lead and Pitt-Greensburg would never look back. Common led the way offensively with three hits and four RBI for the game. Brody Bonadio collected three RBI for the game, while Clark also had a multi-RBI effort.

Green, Common, and Evan Johnston all had three hits to pace the Bobcats at the plate, while Bonadio, Tyler Holland, Matt Mish, and Clark each collected two hits a piece. 

The Bobcats plated four runs in the fourth and five in the sixth and would complete the sweep of the Mounties with a 12-2 victory

Pitt-Greensburg returns to action this weekend as it travels to face Pitt-Bradford on Saturday afternoon, followed by a twin-bill on Sunday against Alfred State.
