Shaw’s Walk-off And Common’s Home Runs Propel Pitt-Greensburg Baseball To Sweep Of Hilbert

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team took both games of a key Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference series against Hilnbert, which were propelled by a walk-off single from Derek Shaw and a multi home-run performance from Chris Common.

With the sweep, Pitt-Greensburg improves to 11-17 overall and moves to 8-6 in the AMCC.

The Bobcats recorded a 10-9 comeback victory over Hilbert in the opening game, and completed the sweep of the Hawks with a 6-5 win in game two.

Hilbert 9, Pitt-Greensburg 10

Pitt-Greensburg trailed by four runs (6-2) after the first inning of yesterday's contest and were down 9-7 entering its final at-bats in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dylan DeRoss gave the Bobcats hope with a leadoff single and Brody Bonadio followed with a double to centerfield to put runners on second and third with no outs.

Following Bonadio's double, Hilbert called to the bullpen and brought on Michael Goodberry with the hopes of sealing the win.Goodberry got Ben Green to fly out to left field, but the ball was hit deep enough to score DeRoss as the Bobcats trimmed the deficit to 9-8. With one-out and a runner on third, Tyler Holland roped an RBI double to right field, which scored Bonadio and tied the contest at nine. The Hawks decided to intentionally walk Chris Common, who earlier in the game displayed his power, smashing his second home run of the season over the centerfield fence.

The intentional walk did not pay off as Derek Shaw came up clutch with a base hit down the left field line, which scored Holland to give Pitt-Greensburg the 10-9 walkoff win.

Offensively, Pitt-Greensburg pounded out 15 hits in the win, led by a 4-4 performance from Bonadio. Holland collected two hits in the game, followed by two hits each from Green and Shaw. Holland and Common knocked in three runs each while Green plated two runs in the comeback victory for Pitt-Greensburg.

Despite lasting just four innings, Andy Prentice struck out a career-best seven batters, while Mikey Sullivan tossed three innings in relief, allowing just four hits and struck out three to post his third win of the season.

Hilbert 5, Pitt-Greensburg 6

Hibert once again jumped out to the lead with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Bobcats would come back and tie the score at a run each on a RBI single from Daniel Kiester, that showed Shaw.

The Hawks were at it again adding two runs in the top of the fourth inning and a run in the sixth as Hilbert led 4-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Common belted his second run of the afternoon to get the Bobcats with two runs (4-2).

Matt Mish sent the Hawks down 1-2-3 in the seventh and the Bobcats used that momentum for a big inning offensively in the home half of the seventh. Kiester led off the inning with a single and moved over to second on a great sacrifice bunt from DeRoss.

The Hawks look as if they had their second out of the inning on a strikeout of Bonadio, but the ball got away from the catcher and the freshman shortstop reached base.

Following the error, Kiester scored on a double from Green and Holland walked. Common tied the game with a sac fly to right field which scored Bonadio and Shaw put the Bobcats into the lead with a single to right field.

Holland's sacrifice fly in the eighth plated Kiester, which gave the Bobcats breathing room, increasing their lead to 6-4.

The Hawks would plate a run in the top of the ninth, but Mish recorded a strikeout and groundout for the final two outs of the game and gave the Bobcats the 6-5 comeback win.

In the complete-game performance, Mish earned his third win of the season, positing 10 strikeouts, just one K off his career-best (11).
