Mount Union Tops @Pittgbgbaseball 10-9 Wednesday Afternoon In Non-Conference Action

ALLIANCE, Ohio- Mount Union scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth , including the game winning run with two-outs in a 10-9 victory over the Pitt-Greensburg baseball team, Wednesday afternoon at 23rd Street Field.

The Purple Raiders trailed 9-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the inning got off to a solid start as the leadoff hitter walked and stole second to begin the inning. The Raiders would tie the contest on a wild pitch, then score the game-winner on an RBI fielders choice.

Offensively for Pitt-Greensburg, Chris Common led the way reaching base in all five of his at-bats, including tying a school-record four walks. In his fifth at-bat of the afternoon, Common drove in a run with a single.

On the mound, the Bobcats utilized a group as Tony Iannuzzo, Mikey Sullivan, Andy Prentice, Dakota McWilliams, and Matt Mish all saw action in the contest.

Mish and Brody Bonadio each had productive days at the plate, collecting two hits a piece. Mish totaled two hits in five at-bats and drove in three runs on the afternoon. Derek Shaw also displayed his patience on the day, walking three times over the nine-inning contest.

Mount Union jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, plating two runs on three hits in its first at-bats, but in the top of the second, Mish singled home Chris Common for the first run of the afternoon for the Bobcats. Common drew a one-out walk and then advanced over to second on a wild pitch.

The Purple Raiders added three additional runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Pitt-Greensburg offense would start to click in the third. Ben Green singled to begin the frame and both Tyler Holland and Jordan Cavanaugh drew walks to load the bases. Mount Union called to the bullpen and brought in Ben Schroth. The freshman pitcher had trouble finding the strike zone and proceeded to walk both Common and Shaw for the second and third runs of the game for Pitt-Greensburg.

With the bags still full, Mish stroked a double to left center, which plated two runs. Schroth managed to get the next two batters to record outs, but the Bobcats added two more runs in the inning on a two-RBI single by Bonadio, as Pitt-Greensburg led 7-5 after three innings of action.

In the fifth, Dylan DeRoss drove in Griffin Clark with a sacrifice fly to push the Pitt-Greensburg advantage to 8-5, but the Raiders got two runs back in the seventh to cut their deficit to 8-7.

The Bobcats added an insurance run in the eighth on a RBI base-knock from Common. Holland belted a one-out triple off the right centerfield fence and came around to score on the base hit from Common.

Mount Union would come right back and score a run in the home-half of the inning and plate two in the ninth to complete the 10-9 comeback victory.
