Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Behrend

GREENSBURG- After dropping the opening game of the day 12-3, the Pitt-Greensburg baseball team earned a split of the doubleheader, defeating Penn State Behrend 8-6 in game two, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Park.

With the split, Pitt-Greensburg improves to 6-14 overall and 3-3 in AMCC play, while Behrend stands at 13-7 and 3-1 in the conference.

Game 2- PSU Behrend 6, Pitt-Greensburg 8

Pitt-Greensburg held an 8-5 heading into the eighth inning, but the Lions proceeded to load the bases with nobody out. It looked as if Behrend was headed for a big inning offensively, but after Dakota McWilliams came on in relief of starter Matt Mish, the senior right hander got John Brittner to ground into a double play and Joshua Wagner to fly out to end the inning. McWilliams limited the damage to just one run, despite bases loaded with no outs in the inning.

In the ninth inning, McWilliams sent the Lions down 1-2-3 to earn his first save of the season and send Pitt-Greensburg to the 8-6 victory.

Behrend scored a run in each of the first three innings, but in the home-half of the third, the Bobcats would strike for three runs to tie the game. All three runs in the third came with two outs.

Tyler Holland singled through the left side to begin the charge and Mish followed with a single up the middle on the second pitch he saw. With runners on first and second, Chris Common belted a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for a double, which scored both runners. Derek Shaw then drove in the third run of the inning on a single to left field, which scored Common.

After a leadoff walk to begin the fourth, Mish sent the next three batters down in order and Pitt-Greensburg used that momentum to score four-runs. Ben Green drilled his fifth home run of the season over the left field fence and later in the inning, Common and Mish both scored when a ball was misplayed by the Lions on a ground ball hit to the shortstop by Griffin Clark

Green knocked in his third RBI of the afternoon in the fifth inning to extend the Bobcat advantage to 8-3.

Behrend slowly crept back with two runs in the seventh and would load the bases with no outs in the eighth. McWilliams came on in relief and got the first batter of the inning to ground into a double play, followed by a pop fly to right by Josh Wagner.

McWilliams tossed a scoreless ninth and sent Pitt-Greensburg to the 8-6 victory.

In the opening game of the day, the Lions took advantage of six Pitt-Greensburg errors to plate 12 runs on nine hits and would go on for the 12-3 victory.

Behrend plated two runs in both the first and second inning, but in the home half of the second, the Bobcats cut the deficit in half, scoring two runs.

The Lions continued to hold just a two run advantage until a big offensive outburst in both the sixth and seventh innings. The Lions plated four runs in each of the final two innings and Behrend would go on for the 12-3 victory.
