BUFFALO, NY- Matt Johnson scored 25 points on a career best 11 field goals for the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg men's basketball team in their 89-70 win at Medaille College on Saturday (Jan. 11). The win is the first time the Bobcats (11-2, 7-1) have defeated the Mavericks (6-8, 4-5) in the Brody Jackson era (2017- Pres). UPG's last victory against the Mavericks came in the January 9, 2016 matchup.
Cam Seigfreid was 3 -for-5 from beyond the arc on his 19-point afternoon, while JoJo France sank 13 points, and Torian Jenkins tallied 12 off the bench. Brady Kingston added 10 points and a team best 5 assists to the stat sheet.
Jenkins, Cody Spaid, and Nate Burt each pulled down 6 rebounds to lead the Bobcats, who owned a 35-28 edge on the boards over Medaille.
The game was a back and forth battle early. The lead changed hands eight times in the opening 10 minutes and was tied four times. The ties came at 9-9 (15:54), 15-15 (13:42), 17-17 (12:17), and 19-19 (11:18). The largest advantage by either team in the opening ten minutes was 4 points (15-11) in favor of Medaille at 15:11.
A three pointer by France at the 10-minute mark put the Bobcats ahead 23-21, which would be the last lead change of the game. Following France's three, Pitt-Greensburg reeled off a 10-2 run to take control of the game.
Medaille hit a three pointer at 7:38 to make it a four-point game, but A 13-1 run by Pitt-Greensburg ensued to end the first half. The UPG defense forced the Mavericks to miss their final 12 shots of the half, while the Bobcats made six of their last 10 field goal attempts to end the opening 20 minutes. Johnson swished a three-pointer with 15 ticks left to put the Bobcats ahead by 16 (43-27), the largest of the half, which they took with them into the locker room.
Pitt-Greensburg led from the first inbound until the final buzzer of the second half. The Mavericks cut the Bobcats lead to 5 at the 14:57 mark of the second half, but once again the Bobcats had an answer. UPG used the next minute and a half to go on an 11-3 run, which brought the score to 58-45.
A layup by Seigfreid at 3:50 gave Pitt-Greensburg its argest margin of the game at 22 (84-62). The layup was the finishing touch to a 12-0 run by the Bobcats. The lead returned to 22 once more at 1:48 (89-67) when Seigfreid converted two free throws.
The Bobcats shot 55.4% (36-65) from the field and 43.5% (10-23) from three-point land, while the Mavericks were held to 37.3% (25-67) shooting and 33.3% (10-30) from three.
Pitt-Greensburg comes back to Greensburg for their next contest when it plays host to the Mounties of Mount Aloysius College (7-6, 4-4) or a 6 pm tip on Wednesday (Jan. 15).
