AUBURNDALE, Fla- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team lost two well pitched games to Concordia (Minn.) Tuesday morning at Lake Myrtle Park Field #2.
Pitt-Greensburg dropped the opening game of the day by a score of 2-0 and would come up on the short end of a 4-1 decision in game two.
Game 1- Concordia 2, Pitt-Greensburg 0
Andy Prentice had a very solid performance on the mound in game one, allowing just two runs over six innings with five strikeouts, but the Bobcat offense could not get anything going at the plate.
Austin Ver Steeg was even better on the mound for Concordia, tossing a complete-game one-hit shutout with six strikeouts. Ver Steeg also provided the only offense of the game with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.
Offensively, the Bobcats managed just one hit and two base runners in the loss. Mikey Sullivan broke up the perfect game as he reached base on an error and Jace Cappellini ended the no-hit bid with a leadoff single to begin the fifth inning.
Game 2- Pitt-Greensburg 1, Concordia 4
Sullivan made his first start of the season in the second game of the day and the sophomore right hander, tossed six strong innings, allowing one earned run and struck out five.
Neither team did much offensively in the opening two innings, but in the third Dylan DeRoss drew a one-out walk and Brody Bonadio singled up the middle, setting up runners on first and second with just an out.
Concordia would escape the threat unharmed, striking out Austyn Carson for the second out of the inning and got Ben Green to hit into a fielders choice to end the inning.
The Cobblers would come right back in the bottom of the inning and plate a run on two hits to take a 1-0 lead.
Pitt-Greensburg would tie things up in the sixth inning when Carson scored on a wild pitch. Carson singled up the middle to begin the inning and would advance to second on a groundout. Carson then moved over to third on a wild pitch and came around to tie the game when Cappellini struck out, but the ball got away from the catcher, allowing Cappellini to reach base and Carson to touch home.
The Cobblers broke through in the bottom of the inning to grab hold of the game scoring three runs on three hits as Concordia would complete the sweep with a 4-1 decision.
Pitt-Greensburg returns to action tomorrow morning against Anna Maria at 9:30 am for its final contest in Florida before returning to Greensburg.
