Baseball Drops Two Against Ursinus To Open 2020 Season

AUBURNDALE, Fla- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Ursinus to open the 2020 season, Friday afternoon at the Russmatt Invitational.

Pitt-Greensburg lost 3-2 in extra innings in game one and fell 22-0 in the second game of the day.

Jace Cappellini and Ben Green each collected two hits to lead the way offensively, while Chandler Goodwin, Jacob Davey, Jordan Cavanaugh, Dylan DeRoss, and Brody Bonadio each had a base hit on the afternoon.

The Bobcats got a great effort on the mound from senior Matt Mish, who tossed six strong innings in the opening game of the day, allowing just one run on three hits and struck out four in a no-decision.

Game 1- Pitt-Greensburg 2, Ursinus 3

Both teams got off to a slow start to begin the afternoon, as the game remained scoreless through five frames of action.

Pitt-Greensburg broke the scoreless tie in the top of the first thanks to a two-out solo home run from Cappellini.

Ursinus answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one and both teams headed into the final inning all locked at one

In the top of the seventh, Bonadio led off the inning with a single through the right side and was advanced into scoring position on a great sacrifice bunt from Austyn Carson. Green followed the bunt with a seven-pitch walk and Bonadio would come around to score on an RBI ground out from Davey.

Leading 2-1 in with three outs to go, Joey Fracek got the call out of the pen to shut the door for the Bobcats. Mike Stanzia singled to begin the inning and would move over 60 feet on a wild pitch.

The Bears put down a sacrifice bunt to advance to runner to third. Pitt-Greensburg once again would make a pitching change, this time bringing on Mikey Sullivan

On the second pitch of the at-bat to Dom Fiorenti, the Bears right hander hit a long fly ball to center, which scored the runner from third to tie things up at two and second the game into extras.

Pitt-Greensburg would go down 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth, but in the bottom of the inning, Alex Mumme smashed a 1-0 pitch over the left centerfield fence to give Ursinus the 3-2 walk-off home run.

Game 2- Ursinus 22, Pitt-Greensburg 0

Ursinus rolled to a 22-0 victory in the second game of the day to complete the sweep. The Bears tallied four scores in the second and added 13 in the third to grab hold of the contest.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to action tomorrow for a single nine-inning contest against Curry College at 4:30 pm.
