Defensive Lockdown And Tonkovich Goal Propels Women's Soccer Past Penn State Altoona

GREENSBURG - Sarah Tonkovich fired in a goal from the top of the box in the 30th minute and that would be all the cushion the stellar University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg defense would need, as they defeated Penn State Altoona, 1-0, this afternoon at Ridilla Field in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Game of the Week.

The Bobcats improve to 13-2 on the season and 5-1 in AMCC play, while the Lions drop to 7-7 and 5-2 in conference. The two squads were the only one-loss teams in the conference coming into today, and the win puts Pitt-Greensburg in sole possession of second place.

The match was a defensive battle through and through, and the Bobcats are built for ones like that.

The only breakthrough for either side came in the 30th minute from Pitt-Greensburg. Tonkovich broke the deadlock, scoring what ended up being the game winning goal. She dribbled into the offensive zone and laced in a shot just under the crossbar from the top of the box with her left foot to put the Bobcats ahead, her fourth goal of her freshman campaign.

Pitt-Greensburg maintained possession for the majority of the match and won the statistical battles of shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks.

The immaculate defense by the Bobcats did not allow a single shot on goal for the Lions, while only allowing them to muster two shot attempts. It is the second time this season the Bobcats allowed no shots on goal, and the first time a conference opponent did not get a shot on goal since October 13, 2018 when the Bobcats shutout Medaille.

For the fifth time this season, the back line of Pitt-Greensburg did not allow a single corner kick.

Offensively, the Blue and Gold legged 17 shots, with nine on net, and kept the pressure on Penn State Altoona by drawing 12 corners. Tiffany Michalek led the Bobcats in shots with seven attempts and three on goal, Tonkovich kicked five shots also with three on goal.

Lauren Yoder added another shutout to her career record with her fifth of the season and improves to 12-2 on the season in net.

Pitt-Greensburg will be back on Ridilla Field on Saturday for a matchup against Pitt-Bradford. Kick off is scheduled for 1 pm. The Bobcats will celebrate senior day prior to the match.
