Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Downs Carlow In Home Opener

GREENSBURG – Senior, Nadege Durand, scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to lead the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's basketball team to a 57-46 victory over Carlow University in their home opener this evening.

Pitt-Greensburg improves to 2-0 early in the season, while dropping Carlow to 2-3.

Durand started the game emphatically with an and-one to get the home crowd on their feet for the first time in nearly two years. Carlow used a 6-0 run in the middle of the first quarter to take an early 10-7 lead. Pitt-Greensburg answered right back with six straight points of their own over the final two minutes of the first quarter and opening seconds of the second. Durand hit a pull-up jumper in the final seconds of the opening frame, while Maddie Sitler kicked off the second quarter with a lay-up to cap off the run.

The second quarter was back and forth, as the lead changed hands four times. Lizzie Penrose beat the halftime buzzer with a mid-range jumper to send the Bobcats into the locker room up by three, 23-20.

The Celtics came out of the halftime break and scored the first six points of the half to regain the lead at 26-23. Pitt-Greensburg got their first bucket of the second half three minutes into the frame on a Durand lay-in, which sparked a 7-0 run over the ensuing two minutes for the Blue and Gold. Carlow fought back to regain the lead at 36-34, but Pitt-Greensburg held them scoreless for the final three and a half minutes of the third quarter and scored four points to take a 38-36 advantage into the final 10 minutes.

The fourth quarter was all Bobcats, as they outscored Carlow 19-10 to win their home opener, 57-46. The contest featured 12 lead changes and three ties before the Blue and Gold took control in the fourth quarter.

Pitt-Greensburg's defense was on point for the second straight game to open the 2021-22 campaign, as they held Carlow to 32% shooting (19-59) and only allowed two three pointers on 16 attempts. The Bobcats owned the boards, pulling down 53 rebounds versus 34 by the Celtics.

The Bobcats outside shooting was not there tonight, going 0-14 from beyond the arc, nonetheless they adjusted and worked the ball inside scoring 26 points in the paint and earning 34 free throw attempts. From the foul line the Bobcats were paced by Sidney McCully, who went 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. As a team the Blue and Gold shot 23 of 34 from the foul line.

Sitler and McCully each finished the night with 11 points, while Shaquoia McCray added 10. Durand was 7-for-14 from the field and converted 4-of-9 free throws to tally her game-high 18 points.

The Bobcats will return to action on Saturday, when they host Chatham University for a non-conference matchup inside Chambers Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 pm.
