Baseball Upended In Extras At Behrend Saturday Afternoon To Begin AMCC Play

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Penn State Behrend, Saturday afternoon in its AMCC Opener.
Penn State Behrend picked up a 5-0 win in the opening game of the afternoon and would prevail 6-5 in 10 innings to complete the sweep.

Game 1- Pitt-Greensburg 0, Penn State Behrend 5
Behrend jumped out to a 4-0 lead plating four runs in its first at-bats of the day. Following the outburst, Prentice settled in and allowed just one run and one hit over the next three innings, before Joey Fracek was brought on in relief.

Fracek tossed the final two innings and gave up just a run and struck out four.

AMCC Preseason Pitcher of the year Thomas Zbenski tossed a complete-game six hit shutout and struck out eight to give the Lions the win.

Pitt-Greensburg had its best offensive inning in the sixth totaling three hits, but were unable to score.

Game 2- Pitt-Greensburg 5, Penn State Behrend 6- (10 Innings)
Iannuzzo gave UPG another solid effort on the mound in game two, tossing 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, and struck out three in a no-decision.

The game remained scoreless through four innings, but in the top of the fifth, the Bobcats would break the scoreless game.

DeRoss and Bonadio smacked one-out singles to put runners on base and Green then scored DeRoss on a single to short. Following the second out of the stanza, Hubbard belted a single to right field, which scored both Green and Bonadio.

The Lions notched two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Bobcats kept their bats alive in the sixth as Bonadio scored Tumicki with a base hit.
Behrend answer the run in the top of the inning with two in the bottom of the frame as the game was tied at four after six innings of action.

Thorp put UPG ahead once again with an RBI in the seventh, but the Lions answered right back with a score on three hits in the bottom of the inning.

In the eighth, Green drilled a two-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Bobcats were unable to take advantage of the scoring opportunity.

Both teams were unable to add a run in the eighth and ninth and the game would head to extras.

DeRoss and Bonadio each collected two out singles in the 10th, but Green flew out to left to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, Collin Harger doubled to begin the frame and later came around to score the inning run on a sacrifice bunt as Behrend would prevail 6-5 in extra innings.

Pitt-Greensburg returns home on Tuesday, playing host to Penn State Altoona for a non-conference doubleheader slated for 1 pm.
