Baseball Splits With Hilbert In AMCC Home Opener

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team split its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference home opener with Hilbert, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Park.

Pitt-Greensburg picked up a 9-8 win in the opening game of the day, but would fall 10-7 in the nightcap.

Notables

Game 1- Pitt-Greensburg 9, Hilbert 8
Tony Iannuzzo earned the win for the Bobcats, tossing six innings, where he allowed nine hits and struck out three. Devin Renzi came on to pitch the seventh and earned his first save of the season.

Hilbert jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Bobcats would get on the board in the bottom of the second when Will Thorp scored Sullivan with a single to center field.

The Hawks added a run in the third, but the Bobcat bats would come alive in the home half of the inning. Sullivan, Goodwin, and Paul Tumicki all drove in runs and in total, UPG collected four runs on four hits and tied the game at five.

In the bottom of the fourth, Green drew a one-out walk and moved over to third on a double from Cappellini. Hubbard came through with an RBI ground out as the Bobcats led 6-5 after four frames.

Neither team scored in the fifth and the Hawks were held scoreless in the top of the sixth, but UPG put together a four-run sixth to grab a 9-5 lead with one inning left.

The first two batters for the Hawks reached in the seventh and Renzi was brought on to close the game. Hilbert made things interesting with a three-run home run, but Renzi shut the door to earn his first save of the year and send the Bobcats to the 9-8 win.

Game 2- Pitt-Greensburg 7, Hilbert 10
Pitt-Greensburg carried the momentum into game two and jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first.

UPG continued to hold the one-run advantage until the fourth, when the Hawks struck for two runs to grab a 2-1 advantage.

Hilbert added two runs in the fifth to double its advantage to 4-1, but in the bottom of the inning, Green and Davey each drove in a run as the Bobcats cut the deficit to 4-3 after five complete innings.

The Hawks answered the two-run fifth by UPG with four runs in the sixth, as they extended their lead to 8-3.

Green doubled home DeRoss in the sixth, but Hilbert answered with a run in the seventh as Hilbert led 9-4.

Pitt-Greensburg rallied for three runs in the seventh, but Hilbert would hold off the charge and go on for the 10-7 win.
