Women's Volleyball Put Up Strong Fight in Bearcat Challenge

LATROBE, PA - The Bobcat Women's Volleyball Team's tough start continued Saturday as the team dropped matches against Allegheny and Westminster in the final day of the Bearcat Challenge at Saint Vincent. Pitt- Greensburg dropped both matches 3-0. 
 
In their first match, the Bobcats faced the Gators of Allegheny. The Bobcats held the lead as late as 9-7 before Allegheny went on a 9-0 run to take a commanding lead. The Gators scored eight of the last 12 points to win the set by a score of 25-13.
 
Pitt-Greensburg struggled to get going in the second set, spotting the Gators a 10-4 lead. The Bobcats were not able to come back, with the Gators jumping out to a 20-10 lead and, eventually taking the set 25-14.
 
UPG put up a fight in the third set after falling behind 5-0 to start. Pitt-Greensburg was able to battle back to take a 9-7 lead before the Gators went on a 13-4 run to take a 20-13 lead. Pitt was able to bring it as close as 22-17, however, Allegheny proved to be too much, taking the set and match 25-17. 
 
Emma Halutick led the Bobcats with four kills while Bianca Jijon contributed three of her own. Abby Copelend led the defensive stats for the Bobcats with 17 digs. Taylor Logan contributed eight assists. 
 
In the second match of the day, the Bobcats dropped three sets to the Titans of Westminster. The match left the Bobcats still searching for their first set win of the season. 
 
The Titans took control of the offensive statistics out attacking the Bobcats with 14 kills to just four kills for Pitt-Greensburg even though the Bobcats had more attack attempts in the set.
 
It was more of the same for the Bobcats in the second set, as the Titans out killed the Bobcats 15-3. Pitt-Greensburg suffered from miscues as they had seven attack errors out of 32 attack attempts. 
 
In the third set, the Bobcats jumped out to an 11-5 lead, only for the Titans to come back and score 14 of 20 points to take a 19-17 lead. The Bobcats were able to come back and get the game within one point, however, Westminster scored the last four points to win the final set. 
 
Copeland once again had a strong match for the Bobcats with 11 digs while Halutick led in kills and Logan led in assists. 
 
Pitt-Greensburg will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Chatham. They will then return home to take on Franciscan in Chambers Hall on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
