LATROBE, PA – The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's soccer team went across town to take on St. Vincent College in a battle for Westmoreland County bragging rights on Tuesday. The Bobcats came away with the bragging rights, winning the match 3-1 behind a two-goal effort by Ashley Lucas.
The Bobcats trailed for the first time all year, 1-0, but came out strong in the second half and score three times to improve their early season record to 4-0. Saint Vincent drops to 0-2 after the defeat.
Pitt-Greensburg came out firing with four shots in the first eight minutes, but could not get either of their two on net past the Saint Vincent goalkeeper. The Bearcats on the other hand found the back of the net on their first shot attempt, which came in the 10th minute to give the Bobcats their first deficit of the 2021 season.
The Bobcats maintained control of the ball throughout the first half, but could not capitalize on any of their 12 shot attempts nor seven corner kicks. The defense held Saint Vincent to just five shots in the opening 45 minutes, all five however were on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper, Paige John got her first career start this afternoon and delivered a victory. She corralled five saves and surrendered just one early goal.
Pitt-Greensburg came out of halftime with energy and wasted no time to take the lead. In the opening five minutes of the second half, the Bobcats scored three times.
Ashley Lucas bookended the five-minute scoring spree with a goal in the 46th minute and 50th minute. Lucas led the team in shot attempts, with seven and put five on goal. Her second goal came on a penalty kick.
Hayley Felix scored her first career goal in the Blue and Gold in the 47th minute, breaking the 1-1 tie.
Tiffany Michalek and Alexsia Barlamas ripped five and four shots, respectively, in the relentless offensive attack by the Bobcats that turned in a team total of 27 shot attempts.
The Pitt-Greensburg defense stood strong all 90 minutes. They did not allow a single corner kick and only allowed seven Bearcat shots.
Pitt-Greensburg will make their season debut at Ridilla Field on Saturday, when they welcome Muskingum University into town. Kick off is scheduled for 1 pm, with a special 2019 AMCC champions ring ceremony commencing prior to that.
