Women's Basketball Drops Close One to La Roche

GREENSBURG – The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's basketball team went right down to the wire against La Roche University this evening but came up just short of the regular season sweep. The Redhawks blocked a three-point attempt in the final seconds to survive the electric Chambers Hall environment, 65-62.

The squads are now tied for second place in the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference at 7-2.

Sidney McCully posted her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Nadege Durand scored 18 points as well for the Bobcats. Maddie Sitler added 12 points and eight rebounds.

La Roche (11-5) controlled the early part of the game and got their lead to as high as 13 points (27-14) with seven minutes remaining in the second quarter. Pitt-Greensburg (12-4) stormed back with a 16-3 run to end the first half and tie it up at 30 apiece after the opening twenty minutes. Melina Maietta started the tun with a three pointer near the six-minute mark and it was capped off with a Shaquoia McCray put-back in the final minute, while McCully drained a pair of triples along the way.

Durand started the second half with a bucket in the Bobcats opening possession to give them their first lead of the game. Pitt-Greensburg kept that lead for the remainder of the third period, except for a minute span that it was tied at 39. The Bobcats took their largest lead of the game, of four points (45-41), into the final ten minutes.

Pitt-Greensburg got the lead up to seven with just over six minutes to play, but La Roche would not go away. The Redhawks scored six of the next nine points to make it a one-point game (56-55) with just under three minutes to play.

The final two and a half minutes was a battle. DJ Whittington tied the game at 60 and then the games leading scorer, Shaundrea Butler, made a layup to give La Roche their first lead since the first half with a minute to play. Durand answered right back for the Bobcats, but Butler was there again for the Redhawks to score her 22nd point of the night and put them back in front. After a Bobcat turnover, Butler made one of two free throws to go up by three with nine seconds left. Pitt-Greensburg came out of a timeout and got a three-point look but it was blocked.

McCray pulled down 13 rebounds to lead a +9-rebounding effort for the Blue and Gold, while also scoring nine points.

The Bobcats were not able to get any scoring from the bench, as the five starters were the lone scorers.

The lead only changed hands two times but was tied nine times in the tightly contested contest.

Pitt-Greensburg will have the weekend off and then return to action against Mount Aloysius on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm in Cresson, Pa. The Mounties are the last new opponent the Bobcats will face in the regular season before rounding out the latter half of the conference slate.
