BUFFALO, NY – The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's basketball fought off a second half comeback from Medaille and held on to win their regular-season road finale this afternoon, 67-64, in New York.
The Bobcats were locked in behind the arc, as they put up their best three-point shooting performance of the season as a team, going 10-for-16 (62.5%). Pitt-Greensburg (16-5, 11-3) completes its regular season road trips having fared well, posting a 10-2 record away from home.
The Bobcats were without leading scorer Nadege Durand today, but that's where the trio of McCully, Maietta, and McCray stepped right up. Sidney McCully scored a career-high of 26 points to lead all scorers and accompanied that with seven rebounds, as well as a perfect 4-for-4 mark from beyond the arc. Melina Maietta drained five triples and totaled 19 points. Shaquoia McCray posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, her sixth straight game with double-digit boards.
Pitt-Greensburg came out firing, as they shot 8-of-14 with three triples in each of the opening two quarters to build up a 42-25 lead at the half.
Medaille roared back out of the break and narrowed the gap to six heading into the final ten minutes of play. The claw back continued for the Mavericks, and they got the game knotted up at 55 with five minutes to play.
Maietta swished a three-pointer to break the tie and the Bobcats kept withstanding every punch the Mavericks threw to keep the lead in their hands for the final four-plus minutes. McCully, who ended the game shooting 6-of-8 at the line, and Maietta made two free throws apiece to close out the victory in the final twenty seconds.
Pitt-Greensburg will return to The Den for their final two regular season games next week. First up is Mount Aloysius on Wednesday at 5:30 pm. The Bobcats won the last meeting 84-64 on January 31 in Cresson.
