Baseball Battles in Opener; Falls to W&J

WASHINGTON, PA – Spring is here! Well, Spring sports at least. The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team had their opener today against Washington and Jefferson. To put some perspective on the matchup, W&J played three games so far, two against ranked opponents. The Presidents came in scoring ten runs twice and beat Baldwin Wallace who was ranked in the top ten in Division III.

With all that being said, what did the Bobcats do to start the game? Well. freshman Ben Aftanas started out the game with a quick single, followed by fellow freshman James Domer sending a line drive to the gap for an RBI triple. Fifth-Year Senior Michael Sullivan Jr. then scored Domer on a sacrifice.

The Presidents came back and scored a run in the bottom of the first two innings to tie the game up. There wasn't another run scored until the W&J scored their third and ultimately game-winning run off of Domer in the eighth inning. The Bobcats did have opportunities to put runs on the board, particularly in the fourth inning when the team had the bases loaded with no outs. Unfortunately, the bottom of the Pitt-Greensburg order was not able to drive home any runs.

The Bobcat pitching settled down in the middle innings and stranded a total of nine Presidents on base throughout the game. However, the W&J pitching was also on task as they stranded eight Bobcat runners, with three of them coming in the fourth inning.

Pitt-Greensburg will pack up on a plane and head south this Thursday to start their Spring Trip. The Bobcats will play a doubleheader on Friday against Martin Luther in Auburndale, FL. The first pitch of game one will be at 10 AM.
