Matt Armenio converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute to help the Pitt-Greensburg men's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw against Mount Aloysius on Tuesday afternoon at Kelly Field, setting the stage for a first-round AMCC playoff rematch between the two teams this Saturday.
The Bobcats (7-6-5, 4-2-2 AMCC) fell behind in the 61st minute after Mount Aloysius (10-5-3, 4-1-3 AMCC) was awarded a penalty kick, but Armenio responded with a composed finish from the spot to tie the match late. It was his sixth goal of the season and came in a moment when Pitt-Greensburg needed it most.
Despite being outshot 24-4, the Bobcats' disciplined defensive shape limited Mount Aloysius to low-percentage chances from outside the box. Goalkeeper Brett Barnes was outstanding, making eight saves to keep the game within reach.
"We forced them to take low percentage shots from outside the box, which was a credit to our disciplined defense," said Head Coach Marc Bucci. "We had enough opportunities to keep hold of the ball to relieve the pressure against us on the defensive end, but too often we failed. If we can be strong in those moments and keep hold of the ball, we'll be able to generate more on the attacking end."
Ethan Rose led Pitt-Greensburg with three shots on goal, while Armenio added one—the equalizer.
The Bobcats will return to Kelly Field on Saturday for a rematch with Mount Aloysius in the first round of the AMCC Tournament, with kickoff scheduled for 3PM.
