The Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team stayed perfect on the season Saturday afternoon, pulling out a heart-stopping 89-88 road victory over Pitt-Bradford in a game that featured nine ties, 12 lead changes, and momentun swings all the way to the final buzzer.
Senior forward
Trent Rozich turned in a career performance, powering the Bobcats with 28 points and 15 rebounds while repeatedly coming through in the clutch.
Jackson Byer added 16 points and eight boards, and
Ty Keffer posted 12 points and seven rebounds as UPG battled from behind for nearly the entire second half.
Pitt-Greensburg trailed 46-42 at the break and fell behind by as many as 10 midway through the second half, but the Bobcats never panicked. Defensive stops and aggressive rim attacks helped chip away at the deficit, and with just over six minutes to play, the momentum began to shift. Free throws from Rozich narrowed the gap, Keffer converted multiple baskets in traffic, and a driving layup from
Michael Bigley made it a one-point game with just over four minutes remaining.
Pitt-Bradford attempted to answer, but Pitt-Greensburg continued to execute down the stretch. With 2:31 remaining, Rozich took a feed in transition and scored to pull the Bobcats within 83-82. After Bradford briefly regained the lead, Pitt-Greensburg delivered the sequence that changed the game. Byer earned a steal near midcourt, pushed the ball forward, and Rozich finished the break to give UPG its first lead since the opening minutes — 86–85 with 1:11 to play.
Rozich was fouled seconds later and calmly sank another free throw, then buried a pull-up jumper from the left elbow with 36 seconds left to make it 89–85. Bradford hit a contested three to cut the margin to one, but on the ensuing possession, UPG made the winning defensive play. A wild Bradford drive toward the basket was cut off, and as the hosts tried to regroup, Bigley jumped the passing lane for a steal with just three seconds left, sealing the road win and preserving Pitt-Greensburg's undefeated start.
Statistically, the Bobcats showcased their toughness: 46 rebounds, 42 points in the paint, and 43 fast-break points fueled by relentless tempo. And while it wasn't the prettiest offensive night from the perimeter, Pitt-Greensburg compensated by attacking the rim and knocking down 31 free throws — none more important than the ones that came in crunch time.
With the victory, UPG moves to 8–0 on the season and 2–0 in AMCC play, continuing one of the best starts in program history. They return to action to host Alfred State to continue conference play Saturday, the second half of a AMCC doubleheader. Tipsoff is scheduled for 3PM, after the women's contest.
