Baseball Opens Season With One-Run Loss to W&J

WASHINGTON, PA – Today marks the start of the spring season as the Pitt-Greensburg baseball team traveled to take on the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson. Junior Ben Aftanas took the season's first pitch into right-center field, and the Bobcats' top four hitters accounted for ten of the Bobcats' 11 hits, but it was not enough as the Presidents squeaked out a win 5-4.

Aftanas and two-time All-Region center fielder James Domer went a combined 7-for-10 with four runs scored and an RBI. Senior Thomas Smith had a bases-clearing triple in the seventh inning to bring the Bobcats within one run and the tying run just 90 feet away. The Bobcats got the tying run to third again in the ninth inning after an Aftanas single advanced Neo Miller with no one out. UPG had three extra-base hits on the day, with two triples by Aftanas and Smith and a Double by Domer.

Pitt-Greensburg had eight pitchers take the mound,  with junior Calvin Bernard getting the Opening Day nod. The Bobcats pitched to seven strikeouts and gave up eight hits, with five coming in one inning.

The Bobcats will travel even farther south on Thursday to compete in the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, FL. Pitt-Greensburg will play in eight games, three doubleheaders, and two single 9s starting Friday at 11:30 AM in Winter Haven on Chain of Lakes Park.
