Baseball Finishes AMCC Regular Season Play, Sweeps Bradford

JOHNSTOWN, PA – The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team entered the final weekend of the AMCC regular season with the chance of earning as high as the second seed in next week's AMCC Tournament. The Bobcats needed to take care of business and sweep Bradford to give the team a shot at the top two seed and the luxury of not having to play in the Tournament on Wednesday. The Bobcats did that, outscoring the Panthers 15-1 in 14 innings between two games.

Game One:
If you heard this before, Pitt-Greensburg sophomore Conner Burkey pitched a complete game and earned the win in game one, his eighth complete game and victory of the season. Burkey struck out eight batters while giving up six hits over seven innings, but the Bobcats were still behind on the scoreboard until the sixth inning.

That is when junior Ben Aftanas took the game over. Aftanas had two doubles in the final two innings of the game. In the sixth, Aftanas scored the tying run on a Thomas Smith RBI single. Ben then drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning with his second double.

The Bobcats opened up the scoring after that, with James Domer hitting a two-RBI single, scoring Aftanas and Neo Miller. Designated hitter Colin Solinski drove in Pitt-Greensburg's fifth and final run of the game with yet another single.

Game Two:
Pitt-Greensburg came into game two, took care of business, and left, as junior Calvin Bernard blanked the Panthers through a seven-inning complete game, striking out four Panther batters and giving up just six hits.

The Bobcats doubled Bradford in hits, 12-6. Four of UPG's top five batters had a multi-hit game, including Aftanas, who followed up two doubles with three singles and a stolen base.

The Bobcats finish the season with a 10-4 AMCC record and, as stated before, can be seeded as high as the second seed in the AMCC Tournament. The games will be played at Sargent's Stadium at The Point, May 7-10 in Johnstown, PA. Ticketing information will be released soon. Be sure to check PittGreensburgAthletics.com for updates.
