The Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw on the road against Westminster (PA) at the UPMC Sports Complex, improving their early-season record to 1-0-1.
The Bobcats struck first in the 38th minute when
Caleb Rumberger netted his first collegiate goal, assisted by
Mitch Murray, giving UPG a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Rumberger's goal capped off a strong first half in which Pitt-Greensburg outshot Westminster 8-3 and controlled much of the possession.
"I felt we dominated the play and frustrated Westminster through our patient possession," said Head Coach
Marc Bucci. "Being undefeated through the weekend was a goal of ours, and we achieved that, so we can be happy going into Tuesday."
Westminster responded early in the second half, equalizing in the 51st minute with a goal from Dylan Weiss, assisted by Santiago Fernandez. Despite several chances from both sides, neither team could break the deadlock in the final 40 minutes.
Pitt-Greensburg finished the match with a 15-9 shot advantage, including 5 shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Nick Braun made 3 saves in a full 90-minute performance, including a highlight-reel stop late in the match. "
Nick Braun made one of the best saves I've seen live in my many years of coaching to preserve the tie," Bucci added. "We had a few chances that I felt we were good enough to convert but couldn't tonight. It'll be important to make the most of our opportunities to score as we get closer to conference play."
Coach Bucci also praised the team's depth and resilience, noting the contributions from across the roster. "A few guys really surprised me. Our depth will be an asset with our difficult schedule. Everyone needs to be ready. Tonight showed I can trust a lot of them to perform on the field, which is a good problem to have. A special congratulations to
Caleb Rumberger for his first collegiate goal. The first of many!"
With the result, Pitt-Greensburg will look to build on this momentum in their next outing at home on Tuesday at 4 PM against Penn College.
