The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg men's soccer team used a four-goal first half and a two-goal performance from Cooper Robson to cruise to a 5-0 victory over Penn State Altoona on Wednesday afternoon at Spring Run Stadium.
With the win, the Bobcats improved to 9-3-3 overall and 4-1 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play.
Pitt-Greensburg wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, striking twice in the opening six minutes. Seth Kullen opened the scoring just 4:25 into the contest, finding the back of the net off an assist from Caleb Rumberger for his fifth goal of the season.
Just 86 seconds later, Caden Loveland doubled the Bobcats' advantage with an unassisted goal at the 5:51 mark, giving Pitt-Greensburg an early 2-0 lead.
The quick start was exactly what head coach Marc Bucci had been emphasizing to his team heading into the conference matchup.
"We keep stressing the importance of that first goal and to get it early is such an energy boost in a conference game," Bucci said.
The Bobcats continued to apply offensive pressure throughout the opening half before Robson extended the lead in the 32nd minute. Robson connected on a pass from Ethan Rose at 31:39 for his eighth goal of the season, pushing the advantage to three.
Less than five minutes later, Robson turned provider, setting up Matt Armenio for his team-leading 13th goal of the season at 36:14. The tally sent Pitt-Greensburg into halftime with a commanding 4-0 advantage.
Pitt-Greensburg maintained control in the second half, limiting Penn State Altoona to just three shots over the final 45 minutes.
Robson capped off his impressive afternoon in the 73rd minute, scoring his second goal of the match off an assist from Mitch Murray at 72:45. The goal marked Robson's ninth of the season and secured the 5-0 final.
Robson led the Bobcats offensively with five points on two goals and an assist, converting both of his goals on three shots. Armenio added a goal while leading all players with six shots, including four on target. Kullen and Loveland each contributed a goal in the victory.
The balanced offensive effort, which saw four different Bobcats find the back of the net, was another encouraging sign for Bucci as his team approaches the final stretch of the regular season.
"The different scorers make us difficult to defend because there's not a focal point to our attack and it was great to have a variety tonight and leave with a shutout win," Bucci said.
Pitt-Greensburg held a commanding 17-8 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. The Bobcats fired 11 shots in the opening half alone while holding Penn State Altoona scoreless throughout the contest.
Defensively, goalkeeper Nick Braun played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves to earn the shutout. Garrett Chandler also came up with a key defensive save in the first half to help preserve the clean sheet.
With a home playoff game already secured and two regular-season contests remaining, the Bobcats will now turn their attention to a challenging weekend matchup against La Roche, with postseason seeding still on the line.
For Bucci, securing the opportunity to host a postseason contest has been an important milestone for a team that set that goal before the season began.
"A home playoff game was a team goal of ours at the beginning of the season," Bucci said. "Having that guaranteed first game on our campus with still two games remaining means we can play without that added pressure and can hopefully play our best soccer with a higher seed still in the mix. It should be an exciting last two games for the program!"
