Game 1: Waynesburg 12, Pitt-Greensburg 1
Pitt-Greensburg found itself in an early hole in game one of Monday's doubleheader, as Waynesburg used a big first inning to pull away for a 12-1 victory.
The Yellow Jackets struck quickly in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on traffic on the bases and a Bobcat error. After loading the bases, a passed ball brought in the opening run before Kaden Flambard delivered a three-run single—extended by an outfield miscue—to make it 4-0 before Pitt-Greensburg could settle in.
The Bobcats answered in the second inning. Landon Snider doubled to get things started, and Ethan Steinmetz followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Ryan Lamberth then drove in the lone Pitt-Greensburg run with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Waynesburg added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly before breaking the game open in the fifth. Taking advantage of walks and defensive miscues, the Yellow Jackets plated six runs in the inning, stretching the lead into double digits and putting the game out of reach.
The hosts added one more run in the sixth to account for the final margin.
Steinmetz led the Bobcats with two hits, while Snider added a double and scored the team's only run. Lamberth recorded the RBI. On the mound, Matt Mazzara took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) over four innings.
Game 2: Waynesburg 17, Pitt-Greensburg 1
In game two, Pitt-Greensburg again ran into an early surge from Waynesburg, as the Yellow Jackets scored in each of the first five innings on their way to a 17-1 win.
Waynesburg opened the scoring in the first inning, using a triple and a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead. The advantage quickly grew in the second, where a combination of hits and a Bobcat error led to three more runs, making it 5-0.
The third inning proved pivotal, as Waynesburg struck for four runs. An RBI single followed by a throwing error allowed multiple runs to score, extending the lead to 9-0.
The Yellow Jackets continued to apply pressure in the fourth, adding three runs with help from timely hitting and hit-by-pitches with the bases loaded. In the fifth, a two-run home run highlighted a five-run inning that pushed the margin to 17-0.
Pitt-Greensburg broke through in the sixth inning. William Somers reached base and eventually scored on an RBI single from Jonah Marks, preventing the shutout and closing the gap to 17-1.
Offensively, the Bobcats collected six hits in the contest, with Marks driving in the lone run. Zach Tyson added a triple, while Somers, Tommy Smith, Landon Snider, and Lucas Judy each recorded hits.
Calvin Bernard took the loss on the mound, with multiple relievers seeing action in the effort. Josh Preston provided a bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
The Bobcats will play their first game of the season on their home field tomorrow as they host LaRoche for a 9 inning conference contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3PM.
