Pitt-Greensburg erased an early deficit and held off a late push from Bethany to secure a 5-4 win Sunday afternoon at Bethany Park.
Bethany struck first in the opening inning, manufacturing two runs without a hit. A pair of walks and aggressive baserunning—including a steal of home—gave the hosts a quick 2-0 advantage before Pitt-Greensburg starter Calvin Bernard could settle in.
The Bobcats responded in the third inning with a decisive swing in momentum. After Zach Tyson was hit by a pitch and Colin Solinski worked a walk, Josh Preston delivered an RBI double to get Pitt-Greensburg on the board. Ethan Steinmetz followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, and Ryan Lamberth capped the rally with an RBI single to give UPG a 3-2 lead.
Pitt-Greensburg added to its lead in the fifth inning with another key offensive surge. Lamberth and Gavin Corbett recorded back-to-back singles, with Corbett driving in a run. Later in the inning, Ben Aftanas came through with an RBI single to push the advantage to 5-2.
On the mound, Bernard provided stability after the rocky first inning. The right-hander worked six innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two and navigating through six walks to earn the win.
Bethany chipped away late, scoring once in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and again in the seventh after a leadoff triple set up an RBI groundout, cutting the deficit to 5-4.
Reliever Matt Mazzara took over in the seventh and delivered a strong finish, tossing three innings to earn the save. He worked out of a ninth-inning jam after Bethany put the tying run on third following an error, but a pop-up to third base ended the game and secured the victory for Pitt-Greensburg.
Offensively, Pitt-Greensburg totaled 10 hits, led by multi-hit performances from Preston, Lamberth, and Corbett. The timely hitting in the middle innings proved to be the difference as UPG secured the narrow road win.
