The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg men's soccer team remained unbeaten on Saturday, using two goals from Cooper Robson and a six-save shutout from Brett Barnes to earn a 3-0 road victory over Gwynedd Mercy.
The win improved Pitt-Greensburg to 4-0-2 on the season, while Gwynedd Mercy fell to 1-5-1. The Bobcats scored twice in the opening half before adding an insurance goal late in the second to secure the clean sheet.
For head coach Marc Bucci, another early goal proved important in allowing the Bobcats to dictate the way the match unfolded.
"We finished another early opportunity and forced Gwynedd Mercy to break out of their defense shape, which helped us really frustrate them," Bucci said.
That opportunity came in the 17th minute. Caleb Rumberger played the ball to the far side, where Robson finished with one touch to give Pitt-Greensburg a 1-0 advantage.
Robson struck again in the 37th minute. Jake McClintock served a ball toward the near post and Robson converted with one touch into the back right corner, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Gwynedd Mercy increased the pressure after the break, recording eight of its 14 shots in the second half, but the Pitt-Greensburg defense held firm. Barnes made four of his six saves after halftime, including back-to-back stops in the 77th minute.
The Bobcats then put the match away in the 81st minute. Ethan Rose set up Matt Armenio, whose header deflected off a Gwynedd Mercy player and found the net to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Robson finished with two goals on three shots, all of which were on target, while Armenio scored on one of his two shots on goal. Rumberger, McClintock and Rose each added an assist.
Despite not seeing a high volume of chances, Robson and Armenio continued to capitalize when opportunities arose.
"They both understand the importance of their part to play in the attack," Bucci said. "Neither of them have many opportunities during a game, but they've been finishing these chances, which is vital for us to keep clicking."
While the offense made the most of its chances, the Bobcats also delivered at the other end of the field. Barnes played all 90 minutes and turned aside all six shots on goal he faced.
"Brett had a couple big saves to keep the lead, but the defense really played well together to keep the shutout," Bucci said.
Gwynedd Mercy finished with a 14-7 advantage in total shots, but Pitt-Greensburg put five of its seven attempts on goal and converted three of those opportunities. The Bobcats also limited themselves to four fouls over the 90 minutes.
With the victory, Pitt-Greensburg extends its unbeaten start to six matches and moves to 4-0-2 on the season. The Bobcats return to action Wednesday when they travel to Penn College.
