The Pitt-Greensburg men's soccer team opened the 2026 season with a hard-earned road victory Tuesday evening, using a late goal from Matt Armenio to defeat Lancaster Bible, 2-1, at Donald H. Funk Field.
The Bobcats (1-0) overcame a long road trip, hot conditions and sustained pressure from the Chargers to come away with the victory. Pitt-Greensburg was outshot 16-5 but put four of its five attempts on goal and made those opportunities count. The Bobcats also held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
"After a long road trip on a hot day, it was a big achievement to get a victory against a well-coached side," head coach Marc Bucci said. "It wasn't pretty at times but always great to talk about the mistakes after a win over a different ending."
Lancaster Bible generated several chances during the opening stages, including an attempt off the woodwork in the 12th minute, but it was Pitt-Greensburg that broke through first.
Jake McClintock connected with Ethan Rose in the 25th minute, with Rose finishing the opportunity at the 24:02 mark to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.
The Chargers continued to apply pressure late in the opening half, but goalkeeper Nick Braun came up with a pair of saves in quick succession to preserve the advantage. Braun stopped Gabe Bormolini's attempt in the 37th minute before denying Joel Walker less than a minute later, allowing Pitt-Greensburg to take its 1-0 lead into halftime.
Lancaster Bible found the equalizer early in the second half. Silas Dellaperute scored off an assist from Jeremy Lee at the 53:54 mark to level the match at 1-1.
The Bobcats remained composed after surrendering the lead and eventually found their opportunity to move back in front. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Armenio delivered the decisive strike, finding the back of the net at 80:08 to give Pitt-Greensburg a 2-1 advantage.
"Two of our top players in Cam and Armenio combined to take the lead," Bucci said. "We made some adjustments to hold on to the lead and I have to give credit to the back line and Braun in the final moments."
Lancaster Bible pushed forward in search of another equalizer, producing three shots over the closing minutes, but the Pitt-Greensburg defense held firm. The Bobcats earned a corner kick with just 31 seconds remaining and saw out the final moments to secure their first victory of the season.
Braun played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with three saves. Rose and Armenio accounted for Pitt-Greensburg's two goals, while McClintock picked up the assist on Rose's first-half tally. Armenio led the Bobcats with two shots, putting both on goal, while Cooper Robson also registered an attempt on target.
There will be little time for Pitt-Greensburg to celebrate the season-opening victory, as the Bobcats face a quick turnaround before playing their first match on their home field.
"Unfortunately, not much time to enjoy this win with the quick turnaround but we'll have to dig deep in another hot game to stay competitive," Bucci said. "The first home game should be a big boost in energy for us and it's definitely needed."
Pitt-Greensburg returns to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. when the Bobcats host Washington & Jefferson in their 2026 home opener.
