Women's Basketball Set to Host Penn State Altoona in First Round of AMCC Tournament

GREENSBURG – Playoff basketball is back inside Chambers Hall. The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's basketball team earned the #3 seed in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament and will host #6 Penn State Altoona in the first-round tomorrow at 7:00 pm.

Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats

The Bobcats finished the regular season on a three-game win streak, posting an 18-5 record and went 13-3 in conference play. On the home court, Pitt-Greensburg has gone 8-3 this season. Senior, Nadege Durand leads four Bobcats who average double-digits, at 16 points a game, which is fourth in the AMCC. Sidney McCully and Melina Maietta, a freshman, net 14.7 and 13.1 per game, respectively. The junior guard, McCully commands the offense and is on the court for a team-high 32.5 minutes per game.  


Pitt-Greensburg led the AMCC in rebounding margin (+10.0) and three-point percentage (32.6%) in the regular season. Shaquoia McCray is third in the league on the glass, pulling down 10.2 rebounds per game, while McCully (42.5%) and Maietta (38.4%) are second and fourth in three-point percentage. 


Penn State Altoona Lions

The Lions snapped a two-game win streak with a loss in their regular season finale to Penn State Behrend, as they finished 7-17 and 6-10 in the AMCC. Away from home Penn State Altoona has gone 3-9 this season. Senior, Alexis Cannistraci is their go-to player, as she is the conference's leading scorer with an average of 17 points per game. Freshman, Ellie Matthews (11.9) and junior Sarah Huston (10.0) each average double-digit points for the Lions, as well. Matthews also commands the boards for Penn State Altoona, and is fifth in the AMCC, at 9.0 per rebounds per game. Emma Kitko can knock down the long-range shots, she leads the team and is third in the conference in three-point percentage (38.8). 


Penn State Altoona ranks atop the AMCC in converting free throw attempts, at 72.1% as a team, however they struggle to get to the line, averaging a conference low 12.3 attempts per game from the stripe. They rank near the middle of the league in nearly every other statistical category, but falter on the glass, where they rank seventh (of nine) in rebounding margin (-7.3), and from beyond the arc, where they rank eighth in three-point percentage (22.9). 


In The Regular Season:

First Meeting (1/19): PS-Altoona (45) @ Pitt-Greensburg (56) 

The Bobcats fell behind early, but a 13-0 run to end the first half sent them into the locker-room ahead for the first time in the game, 26-21. After Penn State Altoona narrowed the Bobcats lead to one at the end of the third quarter, the Bobcats pulled away in the final frame, outscoring the Lions 19-9, to secure the conference win. McCully led all scorers, with 15 points. Durand added 12, as the only other Bobcat to score double digits of the eight players that scored. Pitt-Greensburg owned a +17-rebounding advantage over the Lions, 43-26. McCray had a season-high 16 boards. 

Second Meeting (2/9): Pitt-Greensburg (61) @ Penn St. Altoona (70)  

The Bobcats snapped a three-game win streak with a tough conference loss on the road. After Pitt-Greensburg scored on the opening possession, the Lions scored six straight points and took a lead that they would hold until a fourth quarter battle. Pitt-Greensburg kept fighting all game and took their first lead since the opening minute with six minutes remaining, after a 15-3 run. Penn State Altoona took it right back on the next possession and rattled off 7 straight points. Pitt-Greensburg got it back within one possession one more time (64-61) at the 1:51 mark, but never could get any closer. Durand led the Bobcats with 22 points, eight rebounds, five steals, three assists, and two blocks. McCully added 20 points and made two of the Bobcats three triples on the evening.  The Bobcats were outrebounded (41-36) for the first time since January 17, breaking a streak of six consecutive plus rebounding margin games. Pitt-Greensburg was held quiet from deep, going 3-for-18. Penn State Altoona shot 41.2% from three-point range.
