2025 Baseball AMCC Tournament Preview

Baseball Begins Quest For AMCC Championship on Wednesday

5/6/2025 1:00:00 PM

JOHNSTOWN, PA—Pitt-Greensburg baseball earned ten conference wins in 2025, the most for the program since 2019. The Bobcats secured the third seed in the AMCC Tournament, exceeding expectations from the opposing coaches of the conference after being voted to finish seventh in the preseason poll. The Bobcats will take on No.6 Pitt-Bradford at Sargent's Stadium at The Point in Johnston at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7.

Déjà vu

The Bobcats and Panthers will play their third game at The Point in less than a week. Due to poor field conditions in Bradford, the teams moved their final AMCC Doubleheader of the season to Johnstown. The Bobcats outscored the Panthers 15-1 in 14 innings in the two games.

Conner Burkey earned his sixth win of conference play and his sixth complete game. In game two, Calvin Bernard pitched his first complete game of the season, hurling seven innings of shutout ball.

The Bobcats used the unique dimensions of the field to their advantage, with five extra base hits, including two huge doubles by Ben Aftanas. Aftanas led off the sixth inning with a double and then scored the game-tying run. He followed that up with a game-winning RBI double in the seventh inning.

Can't Have Enough Pitching

The Bobcats have one of the top pitchers in the AMCC, sophomore Conner Burkey. Not only does Burkey lead the AMCC in complete games, but he also leads the nation with eight complete games. Six of his eight wins and complete games have come in AMCC play.

If the Bobcats want to make a run at the championship, they will rely on many veteran arms. Calvin Bernard started two AMCC games for the Bobcats and pitched to a 3.86 ERA over 14 innings. Bernard was the only other Bobcat to throw a complete game in conference play, as he was the winning pitcher in a 10-0 win over Bradford.

The Bobcats' bullpen also has plenty of veteran arms, with seven other pitchers making an appearance in AMCC play. The new format of the AMCC Tournament will be a challenge for coaches to navigate, with the number of games in a short period of time.

Bash Brothers

Pitt-Greensburg has one of the best one-two power punches in the AMCC in Thomas Smith and James Domer. The center fielder and the third baseman have six home runs, eight doubles, and four triples. They are one and two in slugging percentage in conference play, while both are in the top three in average.

Domer ranks fifth in the nation in batting average (.475). In this season alone, Domer has broken the program's doubles and triples record, while also being the Pitt-Greenburg "Hit King".

Run At Your Own Risk

Senior Diego Santos has had his best season behind the plate this year, leading the conference in halting 12 base runners from stealing on him. He has a .969 fielding percentage as well.

Not only has Santos been huge defensively, but he has also had a breakout season behind the plate. Santos has a career-high five home runs this season while batting. 267. His 21 RBI are third on the team.

Strength in Numbers

Pitt-Greensburg will rely on its veteran status to take them where they want to be this week. Overall, seven of the nine starters in the lineup are upperclassmen. Nine of the 13 Bobcats that have made double-digit appearances on the season are upperclassmen.
