A hat trick from Matt Armenio and a dominant offensive performance propelled the Pitt-Greensburg men's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout victory over Hilbert College on Saturday afternoon at Scotties Stadium.
With the win, the Bobcats improved to 8-3-3 overall and 3-1-0 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play.
Pitt-Greensburg controlled the pace of the match from the opening whistle, outshooting the Hawks 16-0 and holding a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bobcats applied pressure throughout the opening half, generating several scoring opportunities before Armenio broke through in the 34th minute to give Pitt-Greensburg a 1-0 advantage. The goal came after a stretch of offensive pressure that included back-to-back corner kicks.
"Scoring first is very important to our success, so it's great we had another one today to calm us down and force Hilbert to pressure us a bit more," said Pitt-Greensburg head coach Marc Bucci.
Pitt-Greensburg carried its one-goal lead into halftime after outshooting Hilbert 7-0 over the first 45 minutes.
Hilbert came out looking to increase the tempo in the second half, but the Bobcats remained organized defensively and continued to limit the Hawks' opportunities.
"We understood what their strengths were and did well to control those throughout the second half to maintain the lead," Bucci said.
The Bobcats eventually broke the match open with three goals over a span of less than 12 minutes.
Armenio struck again in the 70th minute, finishing a feed from Cam Loveland to double the Bobcats' advantage. Just over five minutes later, Caleb Rumberger extended the lead to 3-0 in the 75th minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from Armenio.
Armenio completed his hat trick in the 81st minute, converting a pass from Jake McClintock to cap the scoring and secure the 4-0 victory.
Armenio led the offensive attack with three goals and an assist for seven points, while Rumberger added a goal off the bench. Loveland and McClintock each recorded an assist.
Bucci emphasized the importance of keeping Armenio confident as the Bobcats approach the postseason.
"Keeping Armenio confident is important as we get closer to postseason, and nothing makes him happier than scoring goals and winning games," Bucci said. "We've made the most of scoring on our opportunities during our victories, and he's important to us."
Cooper Robson contributed four shots, including two on goal, while Armenio led all players with six shots.
Defensively, Pitt-Greensburg held Hilbert without a shot for the entire 90 minutes. Goalkeeper Nick Braun played the full match in net to earn the shutout without needing to make a save.
The Bobcats finished with seven shots on goal and limited the Hawks to just two corner kicks as they secured their eighth victory of the season and continued their strong play in AMCC competition.
Pitt-Greensburg will return to the road on Wednesday, October 21, when the Bobcats travel to Penn State Altoona for a 7 p.m. AMCC matchup at Spring Run Stadium.
