For the sixth consecutive season, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Women's Soccer Championship will feature a familiar matchup as second-seeded Pitt-Greensburg travels to Erie to face top-seeded Penn State Behrend on Saturday, November 7, with a conference championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament on the line.
The Bobcats (12-5) punched their ticket to the championship with a 2-0 victory over Penn State Altoona in Wednesday's semifinal, while the Lions advanced following a dominant 10-0 win over Hilbert.
Pitt-Greensburg enters the championship looking to avenge a regular-season loss to Behrend and capture the program's first AMCC title since 2022.
Road to the Championship
Pitt-Greensburg secured the No. 2 seed in the AMCC Tournament after finishing the regular season 11-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Bobcats earned a first-round bye before hosting Penn State Altoona in Wednesday's semifinal.
Freshman Ella Smith delivered the offensive spark for Pitt-Greensburg, scoring both goals in the 2-0 victory. The performance continued an impressive debut campaign for Smith, who has emerged as one of the conference's top young offensive threats.
The Bobcats also turned in a strong defensive performance, keeping Altoona off the scoreboard to secure their place in another conference championship.
Penn State Behrend, meanwhile, continued its impressive season with a commanding 10-0 victory over Hilbert. The Lions scored six first-half goals and added four more after halftime to advance to the championship match.
Behrend earned the tournament's top seed after completing a perfect 7-0 conference schedule and enters Saturday's contest unbeaten this season.
A Familiar Championship Rivalry
Saturday's matchup marks the sixth consecutive AMCC championship meeting between Pitt-Greensburg and Penn State Behrend, continuing a rivalry that has become a fixture of the conference postseason.
The Lions have held the upper hand in recent championship meetings, but the Bobcats enter this year's contest with another opportunity to reverse that trend and bring the conference title back to Greensburg.
The teams met in the regular-season finale on October 27, when Behrend earned a 7-2 victory in Erie.
The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead and extended their advantage early in the second half before Pitt-Greensburg found its offensive rhythm. Smith scored in the 56th minute off an assist from Riley Gesinski, while Gesinski converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute.
Despite the loss, the Bobcats showed offensive efficiency, putting five of their six shots on goal and generating three second-half corner kicks.
Pitt-Greensburg will look to build on those offensive opportunities while limiting a Behrend attack that has been among the most productive in the conference.
Key Players to Watch
Pitt-Greensburg
Ella Smith – Freshman, Forward
Smith enters the championship as one of the Bobcats' hottest offensive players following her two-goal performance against Penn State Altoona. She finished the regular season with 10 goals, including one against Behrend, and has quickly become a reliable scoring threat. Her ability to create and finish opportunities will be essential as Pitt-Greensburg looks to challenge the Lions' defense.
Bella Carroto – Junior, Forward
Carroto has been one of Pitt-Greensburg's most consistent offensive contributors. A returning All-AMCC performer, she entered the final stretch of the regular season among the conference's leading goal scorers. Her experience, attacking instincts and ability to find space in the offensive third give the Bobcats another dangerous scoring option.
Riley Gesinski – Midfielder
Gesinski has played an important role in the Bobcats' attack, contributing both as a scorer and facilitator. She recorded a goal and an assist in the regular-season meeting with Behrend, including the setup on Smith's second-half goal. Her ability to connect passes and create scoring opportunities could prove valuable against the Lions.
Dionna "Tiger" Santia – Defender
Santia brings experience and leadership to the Bobcats' back line. A returning All-AMCC selection, she has also been one of the conference's leading assist providers. Her defensive presence and ability to contribute to Pitt-Greensburg's transition attack will be important against Behrend's high-powered offense.
Kira Howcroft – Goalkeeper
Howcroft will be a key figure in Saturday's matchup after recording eight saves against Behrend during the regular season. The Bobcats will need another strong performance from their goalkeeper to limit the Lions' scoring chances and keep the championship within reach.
Penn State Behrend
Rachel Sickeri – Senior, Forward
Sickeri has established herself as one of the conference's premier offensive players, leading the AMCC in goals during the regular season. She scored twice against Pitt-Greensburg on October 27 and has consistently been a focal point of Behrend's attack. Keeping Sickeri from finding space in dangerous areas will be a priority for the Bobcats.
Marlene Andrade – Midfielder
Andrade gives the Lions another proven scoring threat. She finished among the conference's leading goal scorers and found the back of the net in Behrend's regular-season victory over Pitt-Greensburg. Her ability to contribute offensively from the midfield makes her an important part of the Lions' balanced attack.
Bri Ross – Forward
Ross has been one of the AMCC's top playmakers, leading the conference in assists during the regular season. She also scored in the Lions' October victory over Pitt-Greensburg. Her ability to create opportunities for teammates and contribute goals of her own makes her a difficult matchup for opposing defenses.
Sydney Felton – Junior, Forward
Felton provides additional offensive depth for the Lions and has shown the ability to produce multiple goals in a single contest. She recorded a hat trick against Hilbert during the regular season, demonstrating her finishing ability. Her presence adds another dimension to a Behrend offense with several dangerous attacking options.
Keys to the Match
For Pitt-Greensburg, Saturday's championship will require a complete performance on both ends of the field.
Limiting Behrend's attack will be the Bobcats' biggest challenge. The Lions scored seven goals in the regular-season meeting and enter the championship following a 10-goal semifinal performance. Pitt-Greensburg will need to remain organized defensively, limit space in the attacking third and avoid allowing Behrend to establish an early advantage.
Creating offensive opportunities will also be critical. Smith enters the match with momentum after her semifinal performance, while Carroto and Gesinski provide additional scoring threats. The Bobcats will look to generate more sustained offensive pressure than they managed in the first meeting, when Behrend held a 27-6 advantage in shots.
Capitalizing on scoring chances could ultimately determine the outcome. Pitt-Greensburg placed five of its six shots on goal against the Lions during the regular season, showing that the Bobcats can be efficient when opportunities arise. Turning those chances into goals while limiting Behrend's possession and scoring opportunities will be essential.
One More Win
For Pitt-Greensburg, Saturday represents another opportunity to turn a successful season into a championship.
Under 14th-year head coach Chuck Wigle, the Bobcats have continued to establish themselves as one of the AMCC's most consistent postseason programs. Another championship appearance reflects the program's sustained success, but the Bobcats will be looking for more than another trip to the final.
Standing in their way is a familiar opponent that has set the standard in the conference. Behrend enters the contest unbeaten and riding the momentum of another dominant postseason performance.
Pitt-Greensburg, however, brings its own momentum following a semifinal shutout, an emerging offensive star in Smith and a veteran group familiar with the intensity of championship soccer.
With an AMCC title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament at stake, the Bobcats have one final opportunity to deliver their biggest performance of the season.
The opponent is familiar. The stakes are high. And for Pitt-Greensburg, the opportunity to finish the job is right in front of them.
