A Veteran Group Ready to Raise the Standard 

 Experience is plentiful for the Pitt-Greensburg men's soccer team entering the 2026 season, and eighth-year head coach Marc Bucci believes his veteran group has an opportunity to turn that experience into a memorable fall. 

Coming off a 7-7-5 campaign in 2025, the Bobcats enter the new season with 11 seniors, several returning All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference performers and a group of newcomers adding even more collegiate experience to the roster. 

For Bucci, the combination has helped create a competitive atmosphere throughout preseason. 

"Preseason has been positive for the group," Bucci said. "Trainings have been intense, fast-paced, and highly focused as we prepare for September 1st." 

Pitt-Greensburg will get its first test on Sept. 1 when it travels to Lancaster Bible for its season opener before quickly returning home to face Washington & Jefferson on Sept. 2. 

Experience at the Core 

The Bobcats won't be short on players who understand what it takes to navigate a college soccer season. 

Bucci calls this the most experienced roster he has coached since taking over the program, with the team's 11 seniors expected to set the tone both on and off the field. 

"It's the most experienced group I've had since I arrived as the head coach," Bucci said. "Having the leadership and understanding of our standards from our 11 seniors to implement to the rest of the group will help us be competitive against anyone." 

That veteran presence is highlighted by four returning All-AMCC selections. 

Senior Matt Armenio headlines the group after earning First Team All-AMCC honors last season. Armenio led the Bobcats with seven goals in 2025 and will once again be counted on as a key piece of the Pitt-Greensburg attack. 

"I can point to senior, Matt Armenio, who will be vital to our attack, but can name a number of others who I envision bringing us success," Bucci said. "Armenio will bring his intensity that is contagious to the group around him." 

Joining Armenio among the returning all-conference performers are Cam Loveland, Lucas Pittman and goalkeeper Nick Braun. 

Loveland earned Second Team All-AMCC honors from his defensive midfield position after recording a goal and two assists last season. Pittman was also named to the conference's second team after finishing with four goals and two assists. 

Braun returns in goal after a Third Team All-AMCC campaign in which he posted a 1.06 goals-against average and recorded two shutouts during conference play. 

Competition Creating a Tougher Team 

While experience provides a foundation, Bucci wants the Bobcats' identity to be built around more than the number of games played. 

Hard work, resilience and competition have been recurring themes throughout preseason. 

"Most of preseason has been about forming an identity as being a hard-working group who can be resilient when mistakes arise," Bucci said. "Having the large roster is beneficial in that way that if anyone has an off day, there's someone right there ready to take your spot. This will lead to a mentally strong group that's difficult to play against." 

That competition for playing time gives Pitt-Greensburg depth while reinforcing the standard Bucci wants throughout the roster. 

It also fits with another message the coaching staff has emphasized heading into the season: don't allow one mistake or difficult moment to dictate what happens next. 

"Having a short-term memory is the theme thus far and being able to fight through the difficult times together," Bucci said. "Also, attack and defend as a team will be important as we get closer to conference play." 

New Faces, College Experience 

Despite returning a veteran core, the Bobcats have also added experienced pieces who could contribute immediately. 

Transfers Garrett Chandler, Cayden Luther and Cooper Robson join the program already familiar with the demands of college soccer. Bucci believes that background should help the trio fit into a roster with high expectations. 

"The three transfers in Garrett Chandler, Cayden Luther, and Cooper Robson have brought a sense of understanding the college game and what it takes to compete," Bucci said. "I'm looking forward to seeing the impact they'll have for us with an already experienced group." 

Their additions give Bucci even more options as Pitt-Greensburg looks to build a team capable of competing throughout a demanding schedule. 

Consistency Is the Ticket 

Pitt-Greensburg finished 4-4-2 in AMCC play last season and will enter 2026 looking to extend a run of five consecutive conference playoff appearances. 

Maintaining that postseason consistency remains one of the program's primary objectives. 

"After five straight AMCC playoff appearances, we hope to continue that consistency and earn a spot in the postseason tournament," Bucci said. "The conference is more open this fall and feel there will be a few surprises so our consistency in those seven games is extremely important." 

Before conference play arrives, the Bobcats will have plenty of opportunities to sharpen their game. 

In addition to Lancaster Bible and Washington & Jefferson, Pitt-Greensburg's nonconference schedule features matchups with Thiel, Hiram, Penn State Berks, Wilson, Gwynedd Mercy, Penn, Immaculata, Muskingum and Chatham. 

The Bobcats begin AMCC competition against Pitt-Bradford on Oct. 3. 

Turning Experience Into Results 

With a veteran roster, Bucci wants to see Pitt-Greensburg take another step statistically as well. 

One area of focus will be improving the Bobcats' effectiveness at both ends of the field and creating a stronger goal differential over the course of the season. 

"With the experience we have, I hope to be a bit better in terms of goals and goals against," Bucci said. "With the group we have, we should have a better overall goal differential than in years past." 

Achieving that will require the collective approach Bucci has emphasized throughout preseason. Rather than relying solely on individual attacking or defensive performances, the Bobcats want all 11 players working together on both sides of the ball. 

Chasing a Place in Program History 

Five consecutive postseason appearances have established a level of consistency within the Pitt-Greensburg program. With 11 seniors preparing for their final season, however, the Bobcats are setting their sights beyond simply maintaining what they have already accomplished. 

There is an opportunity to make 2026 stand apart. 

For Bucci, that possibility carries added significance because of the veteran class that has helped shape the program. 

"We're hoping this is a historic group," Bucci said. "The seniors deserve to be sent off in style and we have the opportunity to be remembered as one of the best teams in program history." 

With experience throughout the roster, proven all-conference performers returning and competition pushing the group during preseason, the pieces are in place. 

Beginning Sept. 1, the Bobcats will have their chance to make that history.
