The Pitt-Greensburg men's soccer team continued its unbeaten start to the season Wednesday, capitalizing on its opportunities and battling through second-half pressure to earn a 4-0 road victory over Wilson at Kris's Meadow.
The Bobcats improved to 3-0-1 with the victory, scoring twice in each half while goalkeeper Brett Barnes and the Pitt-Greensburg defense preserved the clean sheet.
Despite the final margin, Head Coach Marc Bucci felt the scoreline didn't tell the entire story of the match.
"4-0 didn't tell the full story and was a much closer game than the score suggests," Bucci said. "We scored our chances early, which helped us grow in confidence and continue to play well."
Pitt-Greensburg took advantage of those early opportunities beginning in the 22nd minute. Cooper Robson opened the scoring off an assist from Caden Loveland, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage. Matt Armenio doubled the lead just before halftime, finishing a feed from Cam Loveland in the 42nd minute to send Pitt-Greensburg into the break ahead 2-0.
The Bobcats carried that momentum into the second half. Just 4:31 after the restart, Jake McClintock found the back of the net off an assist from Owen Schrock to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Wilson responded by putting Pitt-Greensburg under considerably more pressure. After being limited to two shots in the opening 45 minutes, the Phoenix generated 11 in the second half. Several of those opportunities forced the Bobcats to recover defensively, with Barnes making all four of his saves after halftime.
"A lot of the chances we gave up were self-inflicted, which was a weakness on the day, but the group fought hard to react to these mistakes to maintain the shutout," Bucci said.
Barnes made consecutive saves in the 63rd minute and added two more later in the half as the Bobcats protected the clean sheet.
Pitt-Greensburg added its fourth goal in the 70th minute when Caleb Kullen set up Armenio for his second of the afternoon. Armenio finished with two goals on three shots, while Robson and McClintock each scored once. Caden Loveland, Cam Loveland, Schrock and Kullen each recorded an assist.
Both teams finished with 13 shots, but Pitt-Greensburg was more clinical with its opportunities, putting six attempts on target and converting four. The Bobcats also held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Barnes played all 90 minutes and stopped all four shots he faced to secure the shutout.
With little time to recover, the Bobcats will return to the road Friday, traveling to Penn State Berks to complete Saturday's suspended match. Pitt-Greensburg will then continue its road trip with a matchup at Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday.
"Unfortunately, a quick turnaround, so I'm hoping we can recover as much as we can in order to maintain this momentum through the weekend," Bucci said.
